About this listen

‘One by one the clocks of the town struck midnight, when the sounds died away the deep silence of windless night fell again over everything...’

A great imagination makes for terrific ghost stories - stories that go beyond the tapping on the doors in the middle of a night or a whistling thrush or even a squeaky swing in the wind. This is a collection of some such horror stories selected and compiled by Ruskin Bond that will send shivers down your spine.

There is Flaxman Low, the Sherlock Holmes of the supernatural, and his psychological detection by his creators E. and H. Heron; Algernon Blackwood’s ‘The Decoy’ and ‘The Empty House’, taking suspense to unbearable lengths; a friendly hoax in Perceval Landon’s ‘Thurnley Abbey’ that turns into real horror; Alice Perrin’s jungle thriller ‘The White Tiger’; and many more such tales that will spook you with the very best of suspense, mystery and the supernatural.

Ruined by poor choice of narrator.

This is a high quality collection of stories. It's my preferred genre, and I usually give a lot more leeway in terms of narration for supernatural short stories than for other books, but this is unlistenable. The narrator puts forth a good effort, including the application of unique voices for speaking characters. The problem is the syrupy thick accent, and the competent, but coarse English spoken by Mr. Kochar. Nothing is better for a good ghost story than a nice British accent (whether English, Irish, Welsh or Scottish), and there is no shortage of them available for narration work. Why they chose a heavily accented non-native English speaker for this book is beyond me. There are books for which such a narrator would be appropriate, this isn't one of them.
