About this listen
Could she ever share the secret of The Awful Year?
There is one story that novelist Josephine Bourdillon shirked from writing. And now she may never have a chance. Trapped in her memories, she lies in a coma.
The man who put her there is just as paralyzed. Former soldier Henry Hughes failed to complete the kill. What's more: he never received full payment - funds that would ensure surgery for his son.
As detectives investigate disturbing fan letters, a young but not-so-naive Paige Bourdillon turns to her mother's turbulent past for answers. Could The Awful Year be worse than the one they're living now?
Set against the flaming hills of North Carolina and the peaceful shores of the Mediterranean Sea, When I Close My Eyes tells the story of two families struggling with dysfunction and finding that love is stronger than death.

Story
Laya Marston’s husband, Cameron, a daredevil enthusiast, was the complete opposite of her, ready and willing to dive off a cliff-face or parachute across a canyon - and Laya loved him for it. But she was different: pragmatic, regimented, devoted to her career and to supporting Cameron from the sidelines of his death-defying feats. Opposites attract, right? But when Cameron dies tragically, Laya becomes lost in denial, living in the delusion that Cameron will come back to her.

Better than I expected!
When I read the description of the story, I didn't really want to listen to it. But it was the last title left from this author, who I absolutely love, so I listened. It's a beautiful story and I am so glad that I did listen to it! I'm writing this in case anyone else feels that way and wants to avoid this topic, they will know It's really worth listening!

Another great book by Elizabeth Musser
I am a big fan of Elizabeth Musser and have all her books. I consider When I Close My Eyes one of her best. I could not stop listening and was captivated and moved by this book. I also found the things she had to say about love and forgiveness convicting, a d they motivated me to let my faith be ruled by love. Great performance. too.

Incredible! Elizabeth Musser has done it again!
You owe it to yourself to listen/read this book. It grabs you immediately and keeps you listening/reading to the very end. Suspenseful. A who done it with characters that play with your emotions. The narrators did a very good job of portraying the various characters. Multiple narrators was very effective. Every book I have read by Elizabeth Musser has been 5 stars. The trilogy “Secrets of the Cross” is a must as well. All of her books should be offered by audible.

Surprising Plot
This story caught my attention from its beginning. I appreciate its messages of truth, forgiveness, grace and redemption. The actor who voiced the mother’s voice, though, was miscast. She has an excellent voice, but sounded like an older woman of color instead of the apparent white woman she seemed written to be. I recommend this book for anyone struggling with or walking alongside one with depression.

Excellent!
The characters in this novel were perfectly portrayed by their narrators and there were enough surprises to keep me up past my bedtime. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
