About this listen

What happened to Brigitte Berthold?

That question has haunted Daniel Knight since he was 13, when he and 10-year-old Brigitte escaped the Gestapo agents who arrested both their parents. They survived a harrowing journey from Germany to England, only to be separated upon their arrival. Daniel vowed to find Brigitte after the war, a promise he has fought to fulfill for more than 70 years.

Now a wealthy old man, Daniel's final hope in finding Brigitte rests with Quenby Vaughn, an American journalist working in London. He believes Quenby's tenacity to find missing people and her personal investment in a related WWII espionage story will help her succeed where previous investigators have failed. Though Quenby is wrestling her own demons - and wary at the idea of teaming up with Daniel's lawyer, Lucas Hough - the lure of Brigitte's story is too much to resist. Together, Quenby and Lucas delve deep into the past, following a trail of deception, sacrifice, and healing that could change all of their futures.

About the Creator

Melanie Dobson is the award-winning author of 20 historical romance, suspense, and time-slip novels. Four of her novels have won Carol Awards, and Catching the Wind was nominated for a Christy Award in the Historical Fiction category, in addition to winning an Audie Award for Inspirational/Faith-Based Fiction. A former publicist, Melanie now enjoys teaching both writing and public relations classes at George Fox University when she isn’t busy writing. She and her husband, Jon, have two daughters. After moving numerous times with work, the Dobson family has settled near Portland, Oregon, where they love to hike and camp in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest and along the Pacific Coast. Melanie also enjoys exploring ghost towns and abandoned homes, helping care for kids in her community, and reading stories with her girls.

About the Performer

Nancy Peterson began her career with petty theft. Her dad’s brand-new and strictly off-limits tape recorder was too tempting to bear. Purloining the gadget, she and her friends recreated worlds from their favorite books as they read out loud for hours on end. She never could have dreamed that this would be the beginning of a career she loves. An Audie Award-winning narrator and multiple Voice Arts and Independent Audiobook Awards nominee, Nancy has a penchant for dialects—diving deep into the study of language. Her narration style, summed up by AudioFile magazine, "creates the sense of listening to a play instead of a straightforward reading." Nancy resides near the foothills of Salt Lake City with her husband and children, two dogs, three fish, one turtle, one snake, a hive of bees, and a gecko.

Good story but basically G-Rated Christian Lit

I enjoyed the story and felt it was well told but it's clear this story was written by a very conservative Christian who barely even believes in kissing before marriage, let alone anything else. It was extremely G-rated which made the 2 main characters (Quinby & Lucas) pretty white-washed, very prudish, and unrealistic. I don't need full on sex scenes to enjoy a book, but the chaste nature of their relationship was laughable.

Most of all, all of the references to Christianity, Christ's redemptive power, and biblical quotes that came out of nowhere in conversations about other things really bugged me. I'm not a Christian and had I known that was the bent of this book, I probably would have passed.

That being said, the story was well drawn and the ending a surprise (even though I figured it out about 3/4 of the way through the book).

If you're a conservative Christian, you'll love this book. If you don't mind being preached to, you'll probably love it too, regardless of your religious persuasion. I found myself rolling my eyes everytime the narrator started talking about the love of Christ and the power of his promise.

I didn’t want it to end

I enjoyed this very much! And Lukus! Is there anymore of them out there? I’ve never met a man to ask, would you give me a chance to fall in love with you? Wow and looking for His first love for 70 years & finally gets her back.

Excellent book, not a typical WWII story

I almost passed this book up because I thought it would be too depressing. It is not a typical World War II story but more of a love story of 2 children who escaped Nazi Germany and persevered despite the evil all around them. It’s a multi layered beautiful story with a lot of twists. I listened late into the night and couldn’t put it down.

Terrific Romance

I had purchased so long ago. I'd decided to give it a listen. So glad I did. I needed a good romance without the steamy sex explained.. my goodness. I enjoyed the suspense and how the author made the characters believable
