Acerca de esta escucha

Joan Morgan offers a provocative and powerful look into the life of the modern Black woman: a complex world in which feminists often have not-so-clandestine affairs with the most sexist of men, where women who treasure their independence frequently prefer men who pick up the tab, where the deluge of babymothers and babyfathers reminds Black women who long for marriage that traditional nuclear families are a reality for less than 40 percent of the population, and where Black women are forced to make sense of a world where truth is no longer black and white but subtle, intriguing shades of gray.

Still fresh, funny, and irreverent, When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost gives voice to the most intimate thoughts of the post-civil rights, post-feminist, post-soul generation.

It's still relevant

Yes, some of the material may be outdated. However, when the book was written, it wasn't. This is a very good start to many important conversations about Black Feminism and even modern preconceptions of the "Strong Black Woman". I'm a fan.

Late is better than never.

Joan Morgan did that. I’ve been in many so-called women’s studies classes on PWIs. None touched upon the black woman’s experience. They assumed our voices were in agreement to the dominating culture’s ideals and goals. Not so.

This book validated my thoughts, feelings, frustrations, and resentment towards mainstream ideology as it relates to feminism, relationships between black men and women, and the so-called liberal movement in America.

The fact that hip-hop is immersed throughout the book made me feel like it was written for me and my generation. The raw and gritty truths. The hypocrisies. The love. The brilliance and the shameful. All there. All examined by Joan Morgan with a keen eye, expressed with authenticity and brilliant ease. A must listen!

Excellent read

I had to relisten to it half way though. This is for the woman that doesn't realize she's a feminist or what a feminist is.

Necessary

loved it. If you are struggling to accept one narrow definition of the term "feminist", then this book is for you.

Surprising

I didn't know what to expect listening to this book. I've heard it tossed around in my black women circles and social media spaces as a necessary and introductory text. I thought it would be more academic and research laden but it isn't. I loved that Joan spoke in her own words, used slang. It was poetic to me. I'm thankful that she mentions at the end that her intention was to purposely NOT be academic in this writing as it confirms what I experienced. This book is for your around the way girl. Its accessible. Now I need to jump into Joulzey's Smart Brown Girl book club for some discussion and dissection.

Read read read and read again

This was everything we need and didn’t know existed. I laughed, I was moved and felt seen and understood. This is a black girl staple.

Amazing & Reflective

This book appeared as a recommended book by Audible based on my previous selections, and I am so glad I followed through with the recommendation!! This body of work made a concept/identity (feminism) relatable and allowed individuals outside of academia an opportunity to engage in this very necessary conversation. I found parallels to my life, including expectations and thoughts that remain isolated in my mind. A must read for anyone looking to delve deeper into feminism without the heavy jargon. Can't wait to read more of Joan Morgan's body of work.
