Publisher's summary

**The New York Times Bestseller**

**Parade magazine must-read books by celebrities 2023**

"I went through so many emotions reading this book. Reconnecting to one's ancestors and truly feeling, not only hearing, their stories are fertile ground for true ecstatic embodiment of the self. We have to know where we've been to see where we're going." -Willow Smith

"[Smith] is candid and honest... For the first time she reveals the truth behind [the] happy images. An incredible read." -Hoda Kotb, The Today Show

A gripping, at times painfully honest, and ultimately inspirational memoir from global superstar and creator of the Red Table Talk series Jada Pinkett Smith.

Jada Pinkett Smith was living what many would view as a fairy-tale of Hollywood success. But appearances can be deceiving, and as she felt more and more separated from her sense of self, emotional turmoil took hold. Sparing no detail, Worthy chronicles her life—from a rebellious youth running the Baltimore streets as an observer and participant in the drug trade, to the deep bond she shared with Tupac Shakur from the moment they met, to her move to Los Angeles and the successful career she built on her own terms, to becoming the wife of superstar Will Smith and mother to Jaden, Willow and bonus-mom to Trey. A rollercoaster from the depths of suicidal depression to the heights of self-acceptance and spiritual healing, Worthy is a woman’s journey to finding herself again.

In a media driven landscape that crafts narratives for our celebrities, Smith shares herself in an intimate conversation with listeners. She answers questions about her difficult childhood, her marriage, her parenting style, her career choices, and the intense scrutiny that followed “the slap.” An impactful and rare memoir that engages and educates, Worthy shows why adhering to the status quo has never been the plan for Jada Pinkett Smith and why labels and stories crafted by others strip women of their authenticity. Worthy teaches us who Jada is, and how to embrace our most lovable qualities. Complete with thought-provoking writing prompts and meditations on how to discover who we really are and nourish our self-worth.

LOVED IT!!

This was my first ever audiobook and I was blown away. I loved every minute of it! I’m a driver for Lyft and I listened to it as I drove people around. My passengers and I would either sit silently and just engulf ourselves in her words or would converse about what happened in a chapter. I’ve been so invested in this book for the past 3 days I really didn’t want it to be over. I didn’t know how I would start a new book. Her voice is so calming narrating her story. I can definitely see myself listening to this multiple times!

Thank you Jada for your honesty and transparency. Wow is really all that one could say. You’ve shared your wounds which has exposed a lot of the world’s. Either we’ll feel to heal or we’ll go back into a place to conceal. Your resilience is remarkable. I know that everybody has a story, but gosh you had a story!!! You provided a clear lens into your human experience. I have cried, laughed and said Amen. May you forever continue to learn, love and grow!! Job well done Jada🌻💕💕

Great book!

I’m new to listening to books and I must say I can never complete any because they don’t hold my attention. This book was great and I listened to it day and night, driving in my car. Jada tells her story and it such a great way where I visually saw every story.

Intriguing story

This book much more than stories about Tupac and Will Smith. It is a story about a young girl becoming a mother, wife at the same time while discovering who she is outside of all that

A Journey Home

If you are on the fence because of how social media has portrayed Jada’s promotion of this book, I implore you to listen for yourself. Especially if you have experienced trauma and/or forgotten who you were.

This book was a journey home for me. So many similarities in mine and Jada’s life which made me feel deeply connected and committed to hearing her experience. I cried tears of pain, comfort, anger, gratitude and joy. Jada’s story overlapped so many parts of my life and even brought forgotten memories back to me, pieces of myself that need to be nurtured.

Her views on motherhood were affirmation for me, I mean my children show me everyday I’m doing something right but you know there’s just something about another mother’s journey, especially a black mother (for me), mirroring yours that just solidifies you’re on the right track.

I have two sons and a daughter, my daughter is the youngest and when Jada describes how she felt being the mother to a daughter is exactly how I’ve described it. There is something so powerful about that connection.

Jada, thank you for sharing your story! I finished this book in less than two days. In my daily routine of dropping off and picking up and ushering my kids to and fro I am always listening to books! Lol drives my kids crazy sometimes but they all, especially my daughter, we’re intrigued by the bits and pieces they heard.

Listen to the book y’all! And I am begging you to have a journal nearby so that you can capture your thoughts as prompted at the end of each chapter.

Written from the heart♥️

I enjoyed listening to Jada narrate her story. There were several things I didn’t like and would have been more enthralled without, for example, her language, and her repeated soap box for black trail and tribulations. However not being black, I can only imagine the two go hand in hand, I understand it is a part of her being. As my headline portrays, it is evident the book is truly a labor of love for Jada as her heart poured out through the pages. It’s an easy read but it will tug at your heartstrings.
