About this listen

In a collection of original essays, the venerated television journalist, Dan Rather, celebrates our shared values and what matters most in our great country, and shows us what patriotism looks like. Writing about the institutions that sustain us, such as public libraries, public schools, and national parks; the values that have transformed us, such as the struggle for civil rights; and the drive toward science and innovation that has made the United States great, Rather brings to bear his decades of experience on the frontlines of the world's biggest stories, and offers listeners a way forward.

After a career spent as reporter and anchor for CBS News, where he interviewed every living president since Eisenhower and was on the ground for every major event, from the assassination of John F. Kennedy to Watergate to 9/11, Rather has also become a hugely popular voice of reason on social media, with nearly two million Facebook followers and an engaged new audience who help to make many of his posts go viral. With his famously plainspoken voice and a fundamental sense of hope, Rather has written the book to inspire conversation and listening, and to remind us all how we are ultimately united.

Wisdom

I wish the country would sit and read this. Awesome insight from a journalist who has seen a lot. From wars to civil rights, he explains where as a nation we have lost and found ourselves in these experiences. He’s got a great summary on where we are and need to go as a nation to turn this crap around. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Beautiful and inspiring

Dan Rathers tells an amazingly honest and beautiful story of growing up in America that puts just the right perspective on the time our generation is currently living through. It’s a must listen.

The values our country has lost

The narrator was perfect. He spoke from his heart; because he and Kirschner lived through the years of journalism. In the early years an article of truth covering who.what where and when was the purpose of the newspaper. The country was united in the values it shared. Today the new person is foremost interested in telling the story of their beliefs. The country is divided equally in the values equally for and against and these concepts are politically loaded. An excellent read.

This book should be the foundation for a required civics class in every high school in the US.

A wonderful experience...

To hear Dan Rather share his story in his own voice makes a wonderful book a truly heartwarming experience.

Editing is bad

The editor/producer should have corrected the constant clicking sound and Rather’s voice escalations.
But still a great narrative.
