About this listen

Tales from the front lines of 60 years of television.

Emmy Award winner and former CBS News anchor Dan Rather brings his unforgettable staged performance, Stories of a Lifetime, to the Minetta Lane Theatre, where it will be recorded live for Audible Theater. In this deeply personal show, the legendary Peabody Award-winning journalist takes audiences through the most pivotal moments of his life, from surviving a debilitating illness as a child in Depression-era Texas to covering monumental moments in American history such as the Civil Rights movement, the assassination of JFK, and Watergate. An intimate evening of candid commentary, memories, and laughter, Stories of a Lifetime is a celebration of the power of a free press and reminder of why it’s more important now than ever.

About the Creator and Performer

With a famed and storied career that has spanned more than six decades, Dan Rather has been one of the world’s best-known journalists for much of the last half century. He has interviewed every president since Eisenhower and personally covered almost every important dateline of the last 60 years. Rather joined CBS News in 1962. He quickly rose through the ranks, and in 1981, he assumed the position of anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News—a post he held for 24 years. His reporting across the network helped to turn 60 Minutes into an institution, launched 48 Hours as an innovative news magazine program, and shaped countless specials and documentaries. Upon leaving CBS, Rather returned to the in-depth reporting he always loved, creating the Emmy Award-winning Dan Rather Reports on HDNet. Now, building upon that foundation, he is CEO of News and Guts, an independent production company he founded that specializes in high-quality non-fiction content such as The Big Interview with Dan Rather on AXS TV, now in its eight season with more than 140 episodes. After the 2016 election, Rather became known for his social media postings and currently has nearly five million followers on Facebook and Twitter.

A News Man on Himself!

This was by far one of my favorite Audible Originals. I remember watching Dan Rather on the CBS News most of my life. I am a college History Instructor and I also admire all of his early work. I use YouTube and CBS Archives clips of him when I teach my course. This is so wonderful he starts with his early life and completes with a look at today's world. He spins an amazing tale. The audio is amazing. It was live recorded prior to Covid-19 but as he goes from section to section or each story, they use clips of him on the news at various times as a segway. It is a brilliant piece of journalism / slash a one man show. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would 100% recommend it.

What a great listen!

I didn’t want it to end! I hope Mr Rather will record more stories in the near future. Hearing history that I’ve lived through from his perspective was very enlightening. Well done!

If you are going to listen to one thing...this is it!

Absolutely one of the most fantastic things I’ve listened to. If I was going to say something negative about it, it would be that it didn’t last long enough. Great storytelling and it was such an amazing listen.

Wonderful 90 minutes

A rich life told in a series of delightful stories. I could’ve done without the anti-Trump dialogue at the end, but otherwise it was a lovely listen.

Take a cue from Cronkite

He talks about Walter Cronkite being one of the "greats" or that he was the "greatest". Well, why not be like him, you and all of the other media. Walter Cronkite reported the news, as it was. You NEVER knew what his personal opinion was, or what his political stance was. I remember being so shocked, after he retired, and he was finally letting people know his personal opinions and political stances were. That is how it should be. This was a wonderful piece, until he had to go on the Trump hate wagon. I'm not some huge fan of Trump, but I really think he could've left his personal opinions of him (and Nixon) out of this. The stories still could've been told, just without the anti-Republican (and especially the Trump hate) bias that comes out. Glad it was at the end, so I didn't miss out on the rest of this, which was quite good.
