Publisher's summary

From the #1 internationally bestselling author of The Murder Rule comes an emotional novel of suspense about two families at war.

Nina and Simon are the perfect couple. Young, fun and deeply in love. Until they leave for a weekend at his family’s cabin in Vermont, and only Simon comes home.

WHAT HAPPENED TO NINA?

Nobody knows. Simon’s explanation about what happened in their last hours together doesn’t add up. Nina’s parents push the police for answers, and Simon’s parents rush to protect him. They hire expensive lawyers and a PR firm that quickly ramps up a vicious, nothing-is-off-limits media campaign.

HOW FAR WILL HIS FAMILY GO TO KEEP HIM SAFE?

Soon, facts are lost in a swirl of accusation and counter-accusation. Everyone chooses a side, and the story goes viral, fueled by armchair investigators and wild conspiracy theories and illustrated with pretty pictures taken from Nina’s social media accounts. Journalists descend on their small Vermont town, followed by a few obsessive ""fans.""

HOW FAR WILL HER FAMILY GO TO GET TO THE TRUTH?

Nina’s family is under siege, but they never lose sight of the only thing that really matters — finding their daughter. Out-gunned by Simon’s wealthy, powerful family, Nina’s parents recognize that if playing by the rules won’t get them anywhere, it’s time to break them.

Careful someone put spoilers in reviews!

I just paid my precious credit for this book i had been waiting for made the mistake of reading the reviews and some thoughtless person had already ruined it. Be careful reading the reviews there is no spoiler alert nothing. You're reading and they tell you the ending. How can ppl be so thoughtless and ruin things for others? I'm going to want my credit back.

So good!

Love, love, LOVED this book, What Happened to Nina? by Dervla McTiernan. Although it has very obvious Gabby Petito vibes, I found it fresh and addictively readable. I highly recommend you avoid reviews that include lengthy synopsis retellings and just read it with blissful unknowing innocence.
All I will say in this review is that it is yet another really well told story about a missing girl that takes on the impact of social media related to how it affects the investigation and I found the perspectives of the parents on both sides of the situation to be fascinating. REALLY good.

McTiernan does it again!

Such a natural storyteller. Her writing flows so well in this book and the characters embody real traits. So many thrillers today and too far fetched to feel relatable in any way. What Happened to Nina instantly pulls you in. I finished listening in 2 days and loved the poignant ending. Can’t wait for her next!

Good story but annoying voices

This is a good story. But the voices of both mothers are truly like nails on a chalkboard. Especially Leanne. Her voice is constantly quivering and on the verge of crying. Very annoying.

Couldn’t put it down

Wow what a great thriller. I was so engaged and loved this story. It hit on a lot of current issues and had similarities but still different. The narrators were all good. Highly recommend.

Dervla Does It

I'm a longtime Dervla McTiernan fan and while I prefer an Irish, Australian, or English accent with my audio stories,,, she really outdid herself this time. This story was gripping and heart-rending and somehow satisfying through the heartbreak.

Justice?

Intense, yet I couldn't stop listening. Especially maddening was the press who couldn't give the families space. Could this be how it is with mysteries in the news? And then there is social media that can ruin the truth.
This is a great book with excellent narration.

I couldn’t stop listening

I loved the way she told the story from each from multiple character’s perspective. Intricate and involved plot. Super narrators

Didn’t expect to like it

I wasn’t expecting a non-Irish setting to capture my attention. I love Dervla and she didn’t disappoint. The story captured me, moved at a great pace and had engaging characters.

The fragility of everyday life

This story is beautifully written and read. It carries the listener quickly into a certainty that the story won’t have a happy ending and highlights how (social) media is capable of quickly luring audiences into judging the parents of a missing girl , ousting them instead of supporting them in their quest to find their missing girl. I highly recommend this story.
