Publisher's summary
The brain is a marvelous and complex organ that takes decades to fully mature, and no stage in that long process is more critical than the one we call the “toddler” years. During this period—from about one year old to three years old—a child transforms from a helpless infant into a running, chatting, insatiably curious little person with distinctive traits and interests. So, what is happening in the brain during this metamorphosis? How do humans acquire the motor, linguistic, and social skills that define this vital childhood period?
In Welcome to Your Toddler’s Brain, neuroscientist Lise Eliot offers answers to these intriguing questions. Over the course of six lessons, Dr. Eliot guides you through each step of a toddler’s neurological progression. Building on the concept of neuroplasticity—the brain’s extraordinary ability to adapt to its environment—Dr. Eliot explains how toddlers are able to soak up information and quickly master the skills they need to make their place in the world. She also offers insights into the emotional outbursts that characterize this tumultuous period, giving a fresh perspective on the bright side of the “terrible twos”.
Development in the toddler years is defined not only by the “toddling” and tumbling of motor-skill growth, but also by rapid language acquisition, socialization, emotional regulation, and imitation. As you dive into the various ways a child’s brain absorbs and processes environmental cues, you’ll have the chance to see the world, in all its wonder and confusion, through the eyes of a toddler. And by tracing the emergence of your toddler’s selfhood, you’ll be better equipped to make the most of these magical, mind-expanding years.

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

The American story is a story of progress. We’re taught that as time moves forward–and movements for civil rights come and go–America gets better, and better, and better. But the story isn’t that straightforward. Because often, on the heels of what looks like progress, comes backlash. People in power find ways to return things to the way they were before. These moments prove that progress isn’t linear or inevitable. Our standard narratives about American progress aren’t quite true. Backlash offers a new narrative.

Story
Words. We use them all the time, every day, mostly without giving them much thought at all. We take for granted that they’re here at our disposal whenever we need them. But if you’ve ever wished you could communicate more effectively, words are the place to start. It’s incumbent upon you to choose the best words to accomplish your goals, because how you choose to communicate influences—well, everything! The power of communication shapes our professional goals, our relationships, and our lives—so the words we choose to use carry a great deal of power.

Story
While the popular image of the Victorian world is one of stiff formality and old-fashioned values, it was an incredibly transformative time for many people who sought better protections, fairer wages, and greater freedom. And this included an increasingly popular and successful fight for animal welfare. Prior to the 19th century, the mistreatment of animals was rarely questioned, and sports like bullbaiting and dogfighting were common. So, what brought the plight of exploited and suffering animals to the attention of activists, politicians, and the public at large?

But it wasn't until she was pregnant with her first child that she became intrigued with the study of brain development. She wanted to know precisely how the baby's brain is formed, and when and how each sense, skill, and cognitive ability is developed. And most importantly, she was interested in finding out how her role as a nurturer can affect this complex process.

The fact it’s unnecessary to do flashcards with infants and just books with pictures is plenty for development.

Very little science
I expected more scientific explanation of how toddlers develop instead we heard about the wonder of the young years and endless stories about the authors own children. For a mother of two it’s quite the bore.
