About this listen

Hustling as a waitress is a far cry from being the most feared witch in the world. But after surviving ten years of war between humans and supernaturals, Lily finds anonymity a relief.

Even a request for help from an old coven friend can’t bring Lily out of hiding - until her friend disappears, along with the entire coven. What’s worse, wolf shifter and Chief Investigator Leif - the man Lily is secretly in love with - considers her the only suspect. And to top it all off, the dark witch who was her first love has been resurrected...and wants her back.

Lily’s search for the truth could destroy the witch-shifter Alliance and reignite the war with the humans. But if that’s what it takes to help her friends, she’ll do it. Even a retired war witch is very dangerous when provoked.

Fantastic!

The narrator was superb. There was such a mix of male/female characters. making every voice distinct is hard to do. I never struggled to know who was speaking. I read other reviews saying the author didn't give enough backstory, but the plot is solid and easy to follow, the action was amazing, and the main witch humane enough to not go nuclear option when she could have. overall highly recommend and I very much hope for a Part 2.

Reading / narrated on a commode?

Amazing story by Layla Nash and I'm usually impressed by the narrator having listened to many books narrated by Rachel Music... that is until I heard her toilet flush in the first 10 seconds of chapter 10

Needs a book 2 and more!!

Really good book! The protagonist drives me nuts with her stubborn attitude but it would take that attitude to survive what she did as a kid and later.

I can not wait for the next one. Great storyline leaves you wanting more. The author really builds this new reality.

Dark and depressing

This book is dark and depressing, but does keep your attention. It covers the darkness of supernatural war, but there is very little happiness and no real closure at the end.

Not for me

This book is way too long. it started off good but just kept on going! if i had a dollar for every time
1. someone jumped out of a car- usually the MC
2. Lily was tired and didn't have the energy to do the spell but she gets energy from someone else to do it
3. Lily falls down
I'd have enough to buy 20 more books. I will not be continuing this series. The narrator,Rachel Music, did a great job though. And she didn't have to take anyone's energy or magic to do so! ; )

Not what I expected.

As a fan of Nash's City Shifters series this was not what I expected.

A couple things before you buy this:

1)Despite the shifters as characters this is not a romance. (At least not yet, but jeezus, I have a hard time seeing how it will get there)
2)There is no HEA, or HFN.
3)The themes focused on are loss, regret, and depression.

Some trigger warnings (or tags, tags work too):
1) Protagonist with PTSD
2) Torture
3) Body mutilation
4) Depressed protagonist
5) Unhappy ending
6) Murder and death
7) Human sacrifice

As a listener I did not understand what the story was about and where it was going until the scene with the shifter alpha. Prior to that I was confused about the protagonist's motivations and reasoning.

Notes about the recording quality:

1) Invasive background noises such as page turning, appliances buzzing in the background, and sirens
3) Bad edits that sound like they were recorded on a speak and spell
4) One section of static and dead air for about ten seconds.

Bad quality sound recording from either a cheap microphone, or badly designed home studio. I honestly have heard better quality homemade podcasts... It sounds like the narrator could use a course in sound design, or should have utilized an editor/producer. The recording mistakes were intrusive and obvious. The character voices in the vocal performance were inconsistent and badly done. By the end of the book it sounded like two different characters. I think this is due to the voice actor rushing to hit a production deadline, as the acting seemed rushed and forced.

Very Disappointing!

I chose to listen to the book because I really enjoyed her series, “The Pride”. I went on to listen to her next series, “The Pack,” which I had mixed reviews on, but overall kept me interested in Layla Nash.
War Witch was full of gloom and doom with an exceptionally low vibration feel. Once again, Layla portrayed the “strong rare” witch as a meek, self-sabotaging witch that continually makes things harder on herself, rather than leaning on the shifters that love her and want her to align with them, so they could protect her from the demons and humans. There was so much potential for a little lightness to this book, but Layla chose not to let the romance between Lilly and Leif flourish, which it too bad, I think it would have helped this story.

There were parts of the book that were interesting, but honestly most of it was like being on a “running wheel” and I found myself skipping chapters just to get through it, not to mention, the weird sounds that continued throughout the book, along with the bad editing.
