A Very Dark Tale With Some Redemption

What a dark and gripping mystery. Wow! It was so good I couldn’t quit reading/listening but made me anxious. I was so worried about what that horrible mother would do. Amy Winter is a detective following in her father’s footsteps, her adopted father. She shows strength and the ability to go the extra mile to find the answers. In this story she is led along by her mother, birth mother, Lillian Grimes, found guilty of murder. Lillian is manipulating Amy by promising to tell her where the last three bodies are buried if Amy will visit her in prison. The whole story is riveting and you don’t really figure it out until the end when all is revealed. Along with the cold case of the Grimes killings, there is a real and very recent kidnapping of a young teenager in a very reminiscent fashion. Along the way, past meets present and some of the details along the way just add to the complexity of Amy’s life. As Amy regains memories of what happened when she was 4 years old, she comes to know the truth and is able at last to let go of some of the guilt she feels about her sister, Sallyanne. This is a wonderful book. The author is terrific. The narrator, Elizabeth Knowledon, is wonderful. She does the voices in such a subdued and soft fashion that you are spellbound. It takes place in London and no guns are involved. It is dark, almost gothic, but it all about the murders.

GREAT START TO A NEW SERIES BUT......

But the second book in the series "The Secret Child" isn't available on Audible. Not sure I would have started this series had I realized that the second book isn't available. But just to be fair, this book was really good. Fast paced with so many twists and turns. I guess it could be a stand alone novel....but I don't want it to be! :(

First time reading this author and I want disappointed. The narrator was perfect! great job

I'm Hooked!

This was my first Audible Book I listened to and finished. I would look forward to my hour long commute home everyday JUST so I would get to listen to this book! I immediately went to the next book the day I finished this one. Story line was captivating and I always wanted to listen more and more. Love the DI Amy Winter Thriller Series!

Excellent!

I listened to this book in 1 day! I stayed up until 3am to finish it. The story is very well written and the woman narrating it did an excellent job. I can't wait to read more DI Winter novels.

It Had Potential....

I really enjoyed the book but felt there was so much information skimmed over. It could have been more in depth. It was somewhat far fetched at times.

We don't get to choose our family...

Chilling read for the simple fact that who we are, or think we are, really does matter.... and there's nothing we can do about it. This book stuck in my mind as I was reading and I kept trying to figure out just who the bad guy really was. The ending surprised me but the implications left room for another book. Maybe? Please?
