A double homicide and a missing woman lead a detective to unearth disturbing secrets in this gripping thriller from USA Today bestselling author Debra Webb.

It’s the worst possible time for Detective Kerri Devlin to be involved in an all-consuming double-homicide case. She’s locked in a bitter struggle with her ex-husband and teenage daughter, and her reckless new partner is anything but trustworthy.

Still, she has a job to do: There’s a killer at large, and a pregnant woman has gone missing. Once Devlin and her partner get to work, they quickly unearth secrets involving Birmingham’s most esteemed citizens. Each new layer of the investigation brings Devlin closer to the killer and the missing woman, who starts looking more like a suspect than a victim.

But just as answers come into view, the case twists, expands, and slithers into Devlin’s personal life. There’s a much more sinister game at work, one she doesn’t even know she’s playing - and she must unravel the truth once and for all to stop the killer before she loses everything.

Took me a while to get into this, but am I glad I persevered. When things started moving - WOW!! Characters were so well described I felt I knew them. Loved loved loved Cross and the relationship she had with Falco. Carrie was so well described as cop, mother, sister and aunt. I did have a bit of a hard time with all of her family being so much a part of the whole crime wave. A bit too convenient. Outside of that - great story.

Outstanding!

I bought this book months ago and got as far as the first chapter where the protagonist, who's a cop, does something out of character for a good cop. I knew that the author would probably then justify and try to remedy the problem. And so I put this aside and moved on to other reads. Now months later and out of credits, I started it over. I was immediately annoyed again by the first chapter but I forged on. And yes, the author takes the entire, confusing, melodramatic book to finally justify and fix the initial problem so the protagonist becomes the heroine. There we're too many characters in this plot to make the story credible and instead they made it confusing. And it was easy right off to get that the politicians, lawyers and the rich were the bad guys. I don't often trash talk any author's work, feeling it better to say nothing at all, and so I've given this one three stars for effort and mild entertainment. On a final note, I suggest one listen to the narrator's voice in the sample before buying. Maybe it was my cheap earbuds and she wasn't really reading wearing swimmer's nose plugs.

Too Confusing. Too many cliched characters.

This book started out a little slow for me but then really took off. I enjoyed and appreciated the complexity of the plot. I listened to the last 6 hours straight as I did errands. Didn't want to put it down. The narrator did not distinguish the multiple adult female character voices very well so sometimes it was hard to tell who was talking. Overall, a solid, enjoyable, entertaining listen.

Good Solid Mystery

Many twist s and turns. Must stay focused when listening but worth it. Narrator pleasant

Great story

My listen was hindered by having just finished Robicheaux by James Lee Burke. In his mid-80s with a lifetime of brilliant, elegant, and poetically elegiac bayou mystery writing in his quiver, he sets a high standard. Starting Trust No One was a step down and made me think of the smart college composition class student who has hitting all the technical checkboxes but not adding up to anything approaching greatness. Obviously this author knows how to build an audience though. And, on the plus side, the story was usually interesting when it was clear who was doing what. For the first time in several hundred audible fiction books, I had to write out the characters and how they related to each other. There were too many relationships and plot lines that did not blend naturally. I don't mind countless characters, but things need to fit together more coherently. Or maybe it was just user error, since I see so many other reviewers liked the book a lot :) Ending had too many contrived conveniences (I hope that does not constitute a spoiler) to be satisfying.

Spaghetti on steroids; encourage a pass

A little hard to keep characters straight at times. Definitely holds your interest. Good plot.

Good read.

You get hints along the way and you think you know how it will all unwind but there are still some surprises as the last series of events unfold. The narrator’s performance is excellent. I’m looking forward to the next in the series.

Twists and Turns

Slow start with too much musings but moved more quickly about 40% of the way in. Listening was hard because the narrator barely differentiated the characters. I caught on who was talking based on the story line. A better narrator who adds drama and pace would really improve the story. I like the characters well enough to continue the series. Hope it’s a different narrator!
