About this listen

FBI special agent Mercy Kilpatrick has been waiting her whole life for disaster to strike. A prepper since childhood, Mercy grew up living off the land — and off the grid — in rural Eagle’s Nest, Oregon. Until a shocking tragedy tore her family apart and forced her to leave home. Now a predator known as the cave man is targeting the survivalists in her hometown, murdering them in their homes, stealing huge numbers of weapons, and creating federal suspicion of a possible domestic terrorism event. But the crime scene details are eerily familiar to an unsolved mystery from Mercy’s past.

Sent by the FBI to assist local law enforcement, Mercy returns to Eagle’s Nest to face the family who shunned her while maintaining the facade of a law-abiding citizen. There, she meets police chief Truman Daly, whose uncle was the cave man’s latest victim. He sees the survivalist side of her that she desperately tries to hide, but if she lets him get close enough to learn her secret, she might not survive the fallout....

The story is slow

Good book but very slow. The end is somewhat predictable. Still a pretty good book.

Good Book

The narrator was fantastic the romance predictable but the details of preppers was great the characters were more interesting than the mystery. This is great for a person who likes some suspense but not constant
Mercy is very interesting character I really enjoyed getting to know Mercy and her family 😀😀

Loved it.

This was the first novel I read by this author. I really enjoyed how well written and descriptive the plot was, and how the narrator (via audible) captured the emotion and tone of each character.

very good

I mostly enjoyed the book. There were a few things I struggled with because they weren't realistic. Mercy should've divulged what she knew, especially towards the end. I was seriously surprised that Truman chose not to disclose sensitive information. Those two things, coupled with Mercy interviewing her estranged family members made the story far-fetched. However, other than those things, I really enjoyed the story, and I thought the build-up and conclusion were very appropriate. well done!

An Intriguing Mystery

The dark secret from Mercy’s past kept me engaged. The details of the prepper’s lives was interesting and explained many of the choices that were made fifteen years earlier. The story moved along at a good pace and was suspenseful. I like to listen to audiobooks while I walk and this kept me very entertained!

Great story

I really enjoyed this book! I plan to read the whole series now. Mercy is the ideal female main character.

Good plot

I found myself early on predicting the villain in this story only to be completely wrong. Has a good plot, storyline and the narration was done very well.

Flawed Shero persists

Since there is a second book in this series, it won't be a spoiler to say that Merci survives, gains self-knowledge, and really becomes the hero of this story. She is not the only hero in this unusual mystery. Merci has to face her survivalist family after an absence of fifteen years, and solve two crimes in an area where women are expected obey their fathers and their husbands. Some conflicts can not be easily resolved.

The narrator was perfect for this story. She helped me "see" the tangled and foreign landscape painted by the author.

I am liking forward to the second book in the seriousness, both the ebook and the audiobook.
