About this listen

The grieving process: Ty Alexander of Gorgeous in Grey is one of the top bloggers today. She has a tremendous personal connection with her listeners. This is never more apparent than when she speaks about her mother. The pain of loss is universal. Yet, we all grieve differently.

For Alexander, the grieving process is one that she lives with day-to-day. Learning from her pain, Alexander connects with her listeners on a deeply emotional level in her debut audiobook Things I Wish I Knew before My Mom Died: Coping with Loss Every Day. From grief counseling to sharing insightful true stories, Alexander offers comfort, reassurance, and hope in the face of sorrow.

Coping with loss: In her early 20s reality smacked Ty in the face. She was ill-equipped to deal with the emotional and intellectual rollercoaster of dealing with her mom's illness. Through her own trial and error, she found a way to be a caregiver, patient advocate, researcher, and a grieving daughter. She wrote Things I Wish I Knew before My Mom Died: Coping with Loss Every Day to help others find the "best" way to cope and move on; however, one personally decides what that means.

Mourning and remembrance: In the chapters of this soul-touching audiobook, mourners will find meaning and wisdom in grieving and the love that will always remain. Each chapter is a study and lesson in coping with loss:

  • Chapter 1: We've been duped, everyone dies!
  • Chapter 2: When fragmented families grieve
  • Chapter 3: The art of losing
  • Chapter 4: The how of grieving
  • Chapter 5: How to be obsessively grateful
  • Chapter 6: Things every mother should tell her daughter
  • Chapter 7: Dear Mommy

Although I have not yet experienced this, I came across your book because it is still a fear of mine that I simply do not know how I would deal with, should this come. I felt that as a young black woman, it is nice and comforting to hear it from your perspective and how you have learned to cope with your emotions throughout this process. Thank you so much for sharing your story with the world. I found this to be very insightful and moving. I have already shared it with others as well.

Great Story, Well Told

Wow! Couldn’t have expressed these sentiments better myself! I lost my mom 11 years ago when I was 23 years old and did not know I still needed to hear a story like this told. This book made me laugh, cry and recall to memory while short, all the time we did have together and the great use we made of that time. You never stop missing your mom, but there’s comfort in knowing you’re not alone.

Not what I was after

The tittle suggested to me I may learn something helpful Before my grandmother dies to help me cope, help her threw this, help the rest of my fam etc etc. but it all seemed like help with coping after. I made it abt half way threw before giving up on the book. But the author is easy to listen to and engaging. Possibly helpful if you are struggling to deal with grief currently.

Just what I needed

I cried from beginning to end. THANK YOU for saying what I’ve been quiet about for a 1 year and 4 months. People don’t realize that what’s a moment for them is a lifetime for you.

No right answer

I really appreciated that she pointed out people saying, “I’m so sorry for your loss” isn’t the universal correct response that I feel like I’ve been exhaustively told. I believe she painted a very good picture throughout her story, that we all have different stories, and therefore different ways of handling things at different times. While there may be healthier ways to grieve and respond to others grief, nothing is universal, and what works one day is no guarantee it’ll work the next.

A Godsend right when I needed it.

I lost my mom less than 3 weeks ago. This book appeared in my Audible Library. I don't know if my daughter added it or if I did and have no recollection of it.
I never knew what grief was before now. Sure, I had been sad, very sad, when I lost my dad, dog, & other loved ones. Nothing can prepare you for the pain of losing your mom.
This book validates ALL of my feelings, emotions, thoughts, and actions. Thank you, Ty, for putting it all into words. It helps to know that what I am experiencing is completely normal and necessary. 💔

A wonderfully insightful look into grief, pain and loss.

Thank you for letting us into your story. It helped me understand my own grief better and to give something to my own daughters.

Dissatisfied

I’m very sorry about the author’s loss oof her Mom, of course.. But this book was disappointing for me… Continuously repeating the same over & over… Several times I had to check to see if I was listening to an old chapter.
