In 2018 London, the newly divorced Zaleekah, a hydrologist, moves into a houseboat on the Thames to escape her husband. Orphaned and raised by her wealthy uncle, Zaleekah had made the decision to take her own life in one month, until a curious book about her homeland changes everything.

New favorite author

The most amazing characters. My favorite part of reading has always been meeting and learning about the characters. I know the writer is exceptional when I’m thinking about what the characters are doing or where they are when I’m no longer reading.

I am 81 years old. Profoundly moved from this book. Plan to get my first tattoo.

Fascinating Middle Eastern History

Story is mesmerizing and all consuming (as are most of Shafek's novels). Told from multiple views and timelines which is usually not a positive thing for me but this novel is spot on from the first paragraph. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good read or listen - Elif Shafek is an extraordinary storyteller!

Beautiful interwoven characters

The story mixes historic and current events, creating a very personal account of people impacted by conflict and power in the Middle East. The story is beautifully written with wonderfully interesting characters.

King Arthur and his search for truth

It is kind of difficult to hear all about the robberies of peoples special, spiritual statues end up in
wealthy houses in England. There is no excuse for something like this.

Beautiful story

I never read novels until I was introduced to 1540 rules of love. Since then, I have listen to Islands without trees and finally this book. I cannot stop listening to these stories. They’re so amazing.

Very Memorable Characters

This was an excellent recounting of a unique story. I was entranced by the tales of King Arthur. Narin, and Zaleekah, and the water that interconnects their fates. I was not familiar with this author before, but plan to enjoy more of her books.
