About this listen

ALA Best Fiction for Young Adults * ALA Notable Children's Book * Horn Book Fanfare Book * Kirkus Reviews Editor’s Choice * SLJ Best Book of the Year

By the beloved and bestselling grandmaster of fantasy, Sir Terry Pratchett, this is the first in a series of Discworld novels starring the young witch Tiffany Aching.

A nightmarish danger threatens from the other side of reality. . . .

Armed with only a frying pan and her common sense, young witch-to-be Tiffany Aching must defend her home against the monsters of Fairyland. Luckily she has some very unusual help: the local Nac Mac Feegle—aka the Wee Free Men—a clan of fierce, sheep-stealing, sword-wielding, six-inch-high blue men.

Together they must face headless horsemen, ferocious grimhounds, terrifying dreams come true, and ultimately the sinister Queen of the Elves herself. . . .

The five funny and fabulous Tiffany Aching adventures are:

  • The Wee Free Men
  • A Hat Full of Sky
  • Wintersmith
  • I Shall Wear Midnight
  • The Shepherd’s Crown

Tiffany’s mentors, Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg, star in the novels Equal Rites, Wyrd Sisters, Witches Abroad, Lords and Ladies, Maskerade, and Carpe Jugulum.

And don’t miss Terry Pratchett’s hilarious and wise Discworld novel The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, winner of the Carnegie Medal!

A Ripping Good Yarn!

A Ripping Good Yarn!

Pratchett is at his finest here spinning yarns with crazy characters that constantly amuse.

Narration is on point.

Wonderful. An ode to life in the country with magic.

The story is absolutely wonderful, well written and very heartfelt. It is very emotional in parts and trigger warning: death of animals and people is mentioned. But it's absolutely worth it.

Marvelous

This has all the hallmarks of a Terry Pratchett novel, magic and hilarity being at the forefront. I really don’t know why it’s characterized as YA fiction. People of all ages who appreciate Mr. Pratchett’s other work will love Tiffany, too.

Amazing

So good, right there with Alice in Wonderland. I bought the printed version so I’d always have a copy and for my daughter to read when she’s a bit older (a few sexualized references, not r rated or anything but not something my 10yr old daughter would be comfortable with). I love how he hides life lessons life in the sneaky smart way Charles Dickens was able to.

Fantastically whimsical

Normally I can’t stand British writing because the British think comedy begins and ends with puns. They also put being whimsical and absurd above storytelling, especially when it comes to fantasy. This book has the perfect balance between whimsy and story. So that the absurd part enhance the narrative rather than distracting from it.

Narrator

I simply love the narration. Indira Varma is fabulous.
Anything Discworld is good writing, but the Tiffany Aching books are probably my favorite.

Even Better

I was hesitant to listen to anyone reading Wee Free Men having enjoyed it so much reading myself. But Indira Varma, somehow, made this outstanding work even better. This book is both extraordinarily silly and extraordinarily profound. That is challenging enough to write but Ms Varma delivers a masterful performance w pacing and voice perfect to the story.
