About this listen

First in the medieval whodunnit series set in Bampton, Oxfordshire, during the plague years and featuring a newly qualified surgeon

Hugh of Singleton, fourth son of a minor knight, has been educated as a clerk, usually a prelude to taking holy orders. However, feeling no certain calling despite a lively faith, he turns to the profession of surgeon, training in Paris and then hanging out his sign in Oxford.

A local lord asks him to track the killer of a young woman whose bones have been found in the castle cesspit. She is identified as the impetuous missing daughter of a local blacksmith, and her young man, whom she had provoked very publicly, is in due course arrested and sentenced at the Oxford assizes.

From there the tale unfolds, with graphic medical procedures, droll medieval wit, misdirection, ambition, romantic distractions, and a consistent underlying Christian compassion.

First book I’ve listened to by Mel Starr. I was not disappointed. Great narration, great content, amazing plot.

Great Listen

A leisurely pace with a fine, upstanding medieval citizen telling his story of a murder investigation in hindsight. The historical setting and terminology held my interest. I don’t begrudge the time but doubt I will continue the series.

A nice change of pace from the more gritty current modern mysteries.

Just enough history to take you to the Middle Ages. Well read and researched. Enjoyable mystery with some twists

My attention was captured from the very first paragraph.

I’m not sure what happened in the last two chapters, but the first 90% of the book I found absolutely delightful. Great story, moves along I had a nice pace. You may want to turn the narration speed up to 1.1, it is a little slow, and I don’t know what happened in the last two chapters. I literally rewound to make sure I hadn’t missed some thing or a chapter for that perhaps they were giving me a free preview of a different book. Still totally worth it.

805 Wonderful!

Easy listening mystery...(though you have to be paying attention in the first chapter as the characters and places are introduced). The characters are likable, which always makes for an enjoyable read. Not one that I couldn't put down, but far from boring. I'd like to listen to more from this author.

While the story had some predictability, the medieval setting was intruiging and I thoroughly enjoyed the storytelling. Will definitely listen to more books in the series.

The Narrator was as he should be with voice and cadence with the time frame the book was placed as well as the primary characters job!
