About this listen

In 1848, Dooley Monahan, son of struggling Iowa pioneers, went off to to pick up a new milk cow. Young Dooley never came home. Now, nearly three decades later, Dooley Monahan has become an accidental legend, managing to plant a bullet in the chest of a dangerous outlaw. All Dooley really wants is to claim his reward at a bank in Phoenix and make his way north to a gold strike he read about in a newspaper. But fate has other plans. It starts with a family slaughtered by Apaches, a dog smarter than most humans Dooley knows, and a girl with a wounded soul. And the blood-hungry brothers of the outlaw Dooley killed will not give up their pursuit until they've avenged his death.

The farther Dooley tries to head north, destiny pushes him west. His trail is populated by strange friends and dangerous enemies, strewn with bad luck and bad blood - and frequently interrupted by sudden storms of gunfire.

Plot like a pinball

I usually like Johnstone’s writing but the plot in this book was like a pinball, bouncing all around and never seeming to have a destination.

Weird Story That Doesn’t Read Like Johnstone’s Usual Writing

Although this book is compelling, it doesn’t quite make sense. Set in a western setting, it’s not your typical western story.
The protagonist, Dooley, has memory issues that aren’t plausible. He’s 44 years old, yet he’s described as a very old man, which I found distracting. 44 isn’t especially old, even in those times.
The ending is very unsatisfying, and quite unbelievable. I don’t believe Butch and Julia would do what they did in the ending, as Julia had no one and no where to go, unless she went back to where she’d had money problems in the past.
I do not recommend this book, except for two reasons. I love the dog Blue, and the narration is exceptional.

Great book

Great book. Would definitely start this series here and add “Hang Him Twice” as book four to it instead of a stand alone title.
