About this listen

Why are certain women able to stay thin and never, ever diet? What is different between these naturally thin women and those that can only struggle to thinness through obsessive diet-like behaviors? The book explains the significant body of science which finally reveals the differences between the brains of thin and overweight women. It details the alterations in the brain that occur from years of overeating and dieting - and how to reverse them. In a personal and accessible style, the author guides the listener through an easy to follow step-by-step program based on cognitive behavioral therapy. The book's program does not include any food restrictions, or recipes. It does not prescribe any specific exercise program as its sole objective is to restore the brain to its healthy relationship with food.

You will learn how modern foods and ancient survival mechanisms have interacted to create an obesity epidemic. "Famine" brain, high-stress lifestyles, reduced pleasure from food and other factors are examined. Once you understand how your brain has inadvertently gone awry, you will appreciate this sensible approach to "rewiring" you brain back to its natural state - the thin woman's brain.

Better if you have the actual book

Would you consider the audio edition of The Thin Woman's Brain to be better than the print version?

I think if you were to have either the book or the audio book, go with the book. However, I loved the audio version, it's very convenient to listen to on the bus, or while taking a walk.

Any additional comments?

I think that this book is a good listen if you want to practice eating more intuitively.

Well presented information

I just finished this book and have already put into practice the well substantiated information. I have a strong understanding of how the brain works and this book makes sense with everything I know and have experienced. I'm looking forward to using the information to become the thin woman I've always known I really am.

Helpful practical advice for combatting overeating

I’m so glad I listened to this book! I really disagree with some reviews that said this is just another diet book. This book is not at all about dieting. This book helped me understand how I am obsessed with food, addicted to food like a drug addict is addicted to drugs, and how to entirely reframe the way I think about food and its role in my life. It has really helped me eat much leas and lose weight - not by eating certain foods, avoiding certain foods, measuring my food etc like on diets (which could just make you more food obsessed), but by learning to eat only when my body is physically hungry and to stop when I’m no longer hungry. It’s not what you eat, it’s why you eat. It’s been a game changer for me and I’ve spent decades losing and gaining weight.

Some of the science is hard to understand and some of it doesn’t resonate with me (like all the talk about the cycle of shame) but most of the book has practical and helpful advice. It has a lot of lists and charts so it may be easier to use as a reference guide if you have the hard copy but the audiobook is good- the narrator is very good and easy to listen to.

Advice: don't sleep on this one

if you listen and really take notes, you'll keep the weight off forever. I an already putting what she says into practice, it's been 2 weeks, and I'm feeling better about my relationship with food.

I changed my 1 star to a 5 star

at first that I didn't like that The author defines thin in the second chapter as being size 6. Size 6 is a plus size in the modeling world.

I was concerned the author was not designing the book for people that want to be super thin but rather just "not obese". I would say after having finished the book that this is a good book even for someone that is wanting to be super thin too.

Finally--- the end of yo-yo dieting!

I'm a 26 year old woman who has struggled with my weight since I was in single digits. I'm addicted to food, and I've been yo-yo dieting--my weight on a non-stop rollercoaster--- for YEARS.

This book is the first one I've found (and there have been many I've tried) that I feel has given me a tangible, sustainable and LOGICAL life approach to END the seemingly endless cycle of diets and setbacks, and get me back to a state of health and well-being... and best of all, repair my relationship with food.

While I first dismissed the concept of mindful eating and meditation as seeming a bit hokey... having put a variety of her strategies into practice has created a shocking difference in my approach to food and eating in a very short amount of time.

Read or listen to this book!! Though, for those of us with crippling impatience, note that she doesn't get into actionable steps until about Chapter 4 or 5... she explains a lot of the science behind it first.

In my first week of following the strategies outlined in this book, I lost a lot of the mindless stuffing-junkfood-in-my-face behaviour that has defined my relationship with food, and have naturally and easily started to lose weight!

I now understand, and I am relieved.

This book is fantastic! Even though the narrator wasn't my favorite, I was still hooked on this book because of the valuable content it gave me.

This book clarified why I kept losing weight then gaining it again, and helped explain very well how to rewire my thinking for great results. I started following right away and already feel like a new woman!
