About this listen
This is a journey of a personal fitness trainer and a stroke survivor client. This inspiring journey will bring hope and encouragement to those in recovery and their friends and family. This journey took us through rebuilding new pathways, feeling safe in movement again as well as fixing the foot drop and dealing with numbness and loss of sensations throughout the body. There are two goals for this book. One is sent personally from Gary's heart with hopes that his story will help others in the same struggle he had faced. Don't give up! Never quit! He encouraged others. As the fitness trainer, I wish the same, as well as hoping this journey bring insight and education to fellow fitness professionals to help them on their journeys with stroke survivor clients.

Jarvis was a typical, middle-aged man in the early summer of 2019. He didn't know what a transient ischemic attack (TIA) was until he had six of them in one evening. The next day, Jarvis walked into an emergency room on his own power to get checked out. The TIAs had been scary, but he figured they were just a warning that he needed to take better care of himself.

Imagine this (go ahead, it's an easy one): You're bored with your workouts. Nothing's changing; you're not getting stronger or leaner or feeling better, and, heck, maybe you'll just take a layoff and see what happens. You know what happens. That two-week layoff lasts a year, that's what happens! Now consider this: Traffic was light and you're 15 minutes early for your dental cleaning appointment. You flip open your device and bring up your new copy of Before We Go. By the time the dental tech calls you, you've heard two chapters and are amped to get to the gym. Your mind is racing through the appointment, and it's all you can do to stay in that squeaky lounge chair.

But as with many other barriers women have faced over time, we fought our way in. Today, women make up almost half of the marathoning population. Yet most marathon training manuals are written by men. And while these men are experts when it comes to how men can and should train, women need training programs tailored to our bodies....

With his historic win at the 2014 Boston Marathon, Meb Keflezighi cemented his legacy as one of the great champions of long-distance running. Runners everywhere wanted to know how someone two weeks away from his 39th birthday, who had only the 15th best time going into the race, could defeat the best field in Boston Marathon history and become the first American man to win the race in 31 years. Meb for Mortals describes in unprecedented detail how four-time Olympian Keflezighi prepares to take on the best runners in the world.

Story
Famous three-time Grand Slam winner Arthur Ashe pointed out that many in sports fall victim to “paralysis by analysis”. Athletes on any level can experience the pain of overthinking and sabotaging their performance. Blame many traditional methods of teaching and training. How can we train smarter, not harder? If only our body and mind could perform in a way that’s more natural and instinctive. The best athletes have this quality, but many feel it is simply unattainable for them. I assure you it is not.

Story
Triathlon: Winning at 70.3 is dedicated to all triathletes who are thinking about stepping up to the middle distance. 70.3 Half Ironman training requires quite a different approach to the shorter distances, and to be successful, a more professional approach to training is required. Do not set yourself up for failure on race day! Simply doubling your Olympic distance training will not work. Those who do this will struggle. Do not be one of these! 70.3 triathlon is a serious step up and preparation is key.

Story
How much love do you have for yourself? Not the narcissistic "aren't I wonderful?" kind of love but the essential regard for self that empowers you and helps you navigate through life. The type of love that enables you to feel safe and secure in who you are and inspires you to make choices that are good for your authentic self. When scientist David Hamilton realized that his own lack of self-love was sabotaging him in hundreds of subtle ways and more than a handful of major ways, he devised an experiment using himself as the guinea pig.
