Publisher's summary

"A proper twisty thriller."—Sarah Pinborough

A stranger has infiltrated your family…and now he’s taking over.

Paul’s just here to help, or so he claims—sent by a charity for vulnerable people to do odd jobs for elderly widow Gwen. But for Gwen’s daughter Connie, there’s just something about Paul that rings alarm bells from day one. He’s a little too kind, a little too involved…Worse still, Gwen seems to have fallen under his spell.

The last thing Connie wants is a stranger meddling in the safe routine she’s built around Gwen. She loves being the one Gwen turns to for cooking, cleaning and company. But the more Paul visits, the more Gwen is relying on him. By the time he conveniently finds himself between homes and has no choice but to move in, Connie is certain he’s trying to push her out completely.

It’s her word against his, though, and as her attempts to unmask him become ever more desperate she’s not the only one left wondering if she’s lost her grip on reality. But when events start spiralling rapidly out of her control, should Connie wage all-out war on Paul and risk losing Gwen forever—or has that been his plan all along?

Critic reviews

“Though not yet a household name, Marrs is an incredibly talented storyteller with a built-in audience who knows what he can do. When unfamiliar readers get their hands on this one, they’ll want more.”Booklist

“I inhaled this book. A novel of second guesses, of mistrustful characters and downright terrifying ones. An absolute ride of a thriller. I loved it.”—L. V. Matthews, author of The Twins and The Silent Waters

Lots of Twists

This was my least favorite John Marrs book but it was good enough to finish. Many twists and turns. I found the main character to be beyond annoying until close to the end of the book. And I did NOT enjoy the narrators for the older characters.

While I didn’t hate this book, I wouldn’t recommend it either. Just meh especially when compared to his other books which I loved. Can’t win them all. :-)

Great story line

Easy to follow, unexpected twists, good read. I really enjoyed the actual story. But not a huge fan of some of the narrators.

Love the quick pace

I also read The One and loved the multiple POVs as a way to tell the story! It flows and it’s a very entertaining

Meh!

This book was just ok. Second book I’ve read by this author. Had same opinion about that one but so many people raved about this book. Now accepting that John Marrs books are not for me.

The mystery and thinking you know where it is going and you aren’t even close!

Loved it! It doesn’t end the way you anticipated. Which was nice. But in the end the true person like or dislike wins!

Brilliant

Not his best book but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Made me remember a phrase I used to hear as a child. Crime never pays
