About this listen

A chilling, immersive audio experience, The Sound at the End follows the eclectic crew of an Arctic research base and the newcomer who may uncover the secrets they’re each desperate to outrun, written by award-winning novelist Kirsty Logan and performed by a full cast.

On a near-abandoned research base in an Arctic ice field, a skeleton crew works to ensure the centre doesn’t collapse amid treacherous storms. Officially, Trieste Grayling arrives in order to explore and film a sunken shipwreck for a documentary film; privately, she's working through a complicated grief. Trieste soon realises she's not the only one who was attracted to this intense isolation in order to escape her ghosts.

Each of the crew members harbour dark secrets: Mal, the ever-competent medic conducting mysterious therapy sessions, Sweetie, the reclusive engineer with scarred hands, Thorsteinn, the aloof diver tender, Avelina, the temperamental base manager whose stories of home don't quite add up, Grace, an underwater welder and recovering addict, and Judd, the erratic former member of a ‘90s boy band. As they begin to reach breaking point, each one's hidden ghosts finally comes into the light.

Cold dark and gripping start to finish.

This was one gripping listen start to finish. It took a bit to get in, but like a dive, you go under, sink, and then, you're in it. Same here. One of the most immersive listens I've encountered in quite a while. This one will stick with you a hot minute. I found myself right in the thick of it and couldn't put it down. All the voice talent did a fabulous job. This is why I can't drop my Audible, stories like this. If you like adventure and a gripping story, you're gonna enjoy this one. Happy reading, and enjoy!! And, stay warm, and out of the water. You never know what awaits you down there.

Meh…

The sound effects were distracting. I tend to turn off NPR when they add sounds to interviews, too. Just annoying. In this experience, I get it. The underwater sounds added to the experience. The rest? Not so much.

A Pleasant Surprise

If I’m being honest when this book first started I was like oh no I have locked myself into a mega depressing experience. But the more I listen the more entangled I became with what was actually going on. I even slept with my lamp on when I got about halfway through the book LOL *don’t judge me, parts of it are creepy!*
All in all a great book that will keep you locked in the entire time

Chill bender

suspenseful, full of surprises, many head cases and many twists in the story. several people narrating too instead of one person voice over.

Not bad

So I still don't know what this book was about other than the downward spiral of mental illness in an isolated setting. It wasn't horrible and I did stay curious through the whole book. Not disappointed I read it.

Not worth the time

I’m sorry to say this because I love to read.
The narration and sounds were excellent. The visual descriptions were beautiful. The problem is there was a lot of repetition without resolution and…there was no real development of the story. It could have had a unique twist…or something…but it was too fragmented and unfinished to be worth your time.

Disappointing

Great performance, but there’s no payoff. The story starts strong but gets repetitive and at the same time leaves huge gaping holes.

Kept me guessing

Kept me guessing until the very end. And then some. I'm not sure about the ending, but no spoilers here.

Intense and intriguing

I enjoyed the performances, although the background sounds were often painfully loud wearing headphones or in audibly quiet when played on a speaker. It’s a tragic story with complex characters. I was confused as to what the purpose of the base was, why were they there? I enjoyed how the character’s issues unfolded on Mel’s tapes, but never understood the purpose of her research. What was she trying to prove?
