About this listen
Relocating from big-city fame to a small-town newspaper was a matter of life and death for award-winning journalist Jesse Kilgore, but although he left his dangerous past behind, he didn’t escape from serious crime.
When a battered body is discovered in Jackass Creek, Jesse uses the skills he honed as an investigative reporter to help the town of Redbud come to grips with a brutal murder that feeds animosities between the local timber operation and environmental activists.
Not only must Redbud’s colorful locals consider how the politically charged killing might threaten their cherished mountain lifestyle and traditions, the future of a young Native American accused of the murder also hangs in the balance.

Story
It's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories—a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers.

Story
The West's own governments are giving up, have already lost, or are leading the charge to something else. This doesn't sit well with those who believe in liberty. This is the story of a people who have lost the political fight, they've lost the culture wars, they haven't seen a level playing field in a generation, and they are about to be made serfs. None of that matters. They're leaving....

Great story!
What I liked best? The narration! Beautifully done! I have tried some books narrated by AI and they are not anywhere as good as a real person reading! This is holding my attention and I am enjoying it...the characters are rememberable. The descriptions are so well done that I get a picture in my mind. Some scenes I would rather not have a mind picture of. Itxs not gory, but readers can use their mind to 'see' it if they want to.
Just my opinion, but I have listened to a lot of ebooks and this one is a keeper!
