About this listen

Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in. Even after the "outfitter murders," as they have been dubbed by the local press after the discovery of the two more bodies, are solved, Joe continues to investigate, uneasy with the easy explanation offered by the local police.

As Joe digs deeper into the murders, he soon discovers that the outfitter brought more than death to his backdoor: he brought Joe an endangered species, thought to be extinct, which is now living in his woodpile. But if word of the existence of this endangered species gets out, it will destroy any chance of InterWest, a multi-national natural gas company, building an oil pipeline that would bring the company billions of dollars across Wyoming, through the mountains and forests of Twelve Sleep. The closer Joe comes to the truth behind the outfitter murders, the endangered species and InterWest, the closer he comes to losing everything he holds dear.

A Refreshing Detective

What made the experience of listening to Open Season the most enjoyable?

I have become a little tired of jaded, alcoholic detectives. Joe Pickett is a refreshing change.

What other book might you compare Open Season to and why?

None come to mind.

Which scene was your favorite?

I guess the one where his daughter escapes to the woods.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Nothing comes to mind.

Any additional comments?

Interesting story with a great setting. The underlying question about the environment versus the economy is handled well. The villain makes a compelling case for not sacrificing too much to keep near extinct species from becoming extinct.

Introduction to Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett!

I should have reviewed this 2001 C. J. Box novel years ago. Open Season is Book 1 in the long series. Twelve Sleep, Wyoming's game warden Joe Pickett is one of the most popular protagonists in all of the suspense mystery world. The novels in the series are standalone, but Open Season simply must be read first to understand the determined, thorough, and totally ethical good guy Joe Pickett. David Chandler narrates all of C. J. Box's novels. He's quite good. but not one of the best.

good but stressful

Joe is a good man... we don't know about his wifre really till almost the end... this was abused story to stick with because it was emotional what they all went through, but worth hanging in there... will try the next one... but I don't want to feel stressed for the whole book till the end, every time...

Cheif Seatle would be proud

What did you love best about Open Season?

So glad to read a thriller about real pressing events in the US and about something other than terrorism.

Well written - perfect for a good road trip

C. J. Box has started a good series with the Joe Pickett character. I'm interested to see where it goes.
Box is no Clive Cussler, but someday I hope he gets to that level.

The good thing about this book is it keeps your attention and the story is easy to follow. It's perfect for a good road trip.

Very good listen

Not quite as entertaining for me as Walt Longmire series but never the less very well written and nice storyline. I was sure the weasels were authentic.

Not Bad for a Beginner

Would you try another book from C. J. Box and/or David Chandler?

Yes. I already have.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Open Season?

The last couple of chapters were a real surprise. Without telling, the action was good, the surprise was great & it made me go out & buy the next one in the series.

What aspect of David Chandler’s performance would you have changed?

there's something just a little dull about the beginning of the book & his narration is part of it.

Was Open Season worth the listening time?

It was a slow starter. I almost gave up on it but, I was working on something that I couldn't turn off so I hung in there. Then it changed into an action thriller. I enjoyed the last two thirds of the book immensely & would recommend it - you just have to get past the dull beginning.

All American

Reminiscent of Jack Armstrong, the All American Boy - or the hero on the Wheaties box.
