About this listen

When a young woman returns to North Carolina after a 30-year absence, she finds that the once grand tobacco plantation she called home holds more secrets than she ever imagined.

Though Peak Plantation has been in her family for generations, Leslie Nichols can't wait to rid herself of the farm left to her by her estranged grandmother Maggie - and with it the disturbing memories of her mother's death, her father's disgrace, and her unhappy childhood. But Leslie isn't the only one with a claim to Peak.

Jay Davenport, Peak's reclusive caretaker, has his own reasons for holding onto the land bequeathed to him by Leslie's grandmother. Before she died, Maggie hinted at a terrible secret surrounding Adele Laveau, a lady's maid who came to Peak during the 1930s and died under mysterious circumstances. Jay is haunted by Maggie's story, yet the truth eludes him - until Leslie uncovers a cryptically marked grave on the property.

As they delve into the mystery of Adele's death, Leslie and Jay discover shocking secrets that extend deep into the roots of Leslie's family tree - secrets that have the power to alter her life forever.

Plantation without Dreams

The strength of a women goes beyond comprehension when love is at play. The weakness of some men makes me wonder why the heart is such a strong muscle

Enjoyed the story

Really enjoyed the plot twists in the storyline. I can usually figure them out too soon, but there was one that I didn’t expect. Narrator was really good too.

Touching novel of historical fiction.

Warm and interesting story of the 1930's south. Great characterization. Although I found this book a very good read, I feel the story a bit too long with unnecessary conversation and detail.

Beautiful & heartbreaking

This is a story that draws you in. The character of Adele is rich and full of depth. Normally I prefer present day parts of stories, but the telling of Adele’s life in her own “voice” is by far the best here. Definitely worth the read!!

A book you should read and not listen to.

I really enjoyed the story but for the first time could not stand the narrator as Leslie. Her voice ended each sentence on an upswing that was very distracting. I think I would have enjoyed reading the book instead of listening to the narrators voice.

Hands down the best book I have ever listened to

This book was amazing in every way. It kept my guessing throughout the whole thing, I could not put it down and did not want it to end. I listen to alot of books, I average one book about every 3/4 days so to say this is my favorite ever is saying alot. I don’t want to give anything away so I’m not going to say anything else. Just get this book, you won’t regret it!
