About this listen

The movie star and the dog groomer are one kiss away from the perfect love story. That’s the hiccup in a warm and witty romance by the bestselling author of Roommaid.

The meet-cute award goes to dog groomer Juliet Nolan. It’s one of Hollywood’s biggest nights when she volunteers as a seat filler and winds up next to movie heartthrob Noah freaking Douglas. Tongue-tied and toes curling in her pink Converse, she pretends that she doesn’t have a clue who he is. It’s the only way to keep from swooning.

She’s pretty and unpretentious, loves his dog, and is not a worshipping fan. No way Noah’s giving up on her, even if his affectionate pursuit comes with a bump: Juliet has a pathological fear of kissing and the disappointments that follow. What odds does romance have without that momentous, stupendous, once-in-a-lifetime first smooch? Patient, empathetic, and carrying personal burdens of his own, Noah suggests a remedy: they rehearse.

The lessons begin. The guards come down. But there’s another hitch they weren’t betting on. As for that cue-the-orchestra-and-roll-credits happy ending? It might take more than practice to make it perfect.

Critic reviews

“Wilson (Roommaid) balances the quirky with the heartfelt in this adorable rom-com.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Wilson’s follow-up to Roommaid is a fun romp with only-in-the-movies-level swoons and genuine laugh-out-loud moments. With a fairly PG rating, this one may also work for teen romance readers.” (Library Journal)

“An emotionally satisfying romance novel by an author with a genuine flair for combining originality with a particularly effective style of narrative storytelling…extraordinary and unreservedly recommended....” (Midwest Book Review)

Lighthearted!

I love this silly lighthearted love story! The steamy doesn’t get to be too much. The characters could be real; not in my world but it’s not impossible to consider. Maybe there’s a part two in the future?

My Musings

Another light hearted romantic comedy with endearing characters and a great plot. This one has a lot of emotion, more than is found in this sub genre. Great narrator. Happy reading and listening!

IMHO Omit the details of the secret

After reading the description, I was curious about the story. I felt the story was well-written, the characters were interesting and well performed. I enjoyed the characters for most of the book…until a few chapters after the secret was revealed. The details were just too graphic for my taste. I increased the speed to 1.6 just to get through the last few chapters quickly without missing any important details, alas, but it was a struggle.

Loved this!

I cannot remember if I bought this or if it's part of the Audible membership, but I'm so glad I picked it up. I loved this storyline and the characters. I laughed often. The bantering was excellent. At the end, I almost threw my phone but thankfully my frustration was short lived and the HEA was sweet. I wasn't ready for it to be over.

Kate Marcin is an excellent narrator. I was so immersed into the story that I forgot it was being read by one person. This is a better than five star narrator.

Fun and predictable story.

The story is predictable, but funny. There many scenes and exchanges between characters that are laugh out loud funny.

However it suffers from over exposition and abundant psychoanalysis. More showing and less telling us - we don’t need every “and uhm” thought of the heroine to get it. Nor does it help when character are explaining their motivations ALL the time.

I was confused by the narrators performance. And switched speed several times thinking it was messed up. If two female characters were having a conversation it was difficult to discern who said what. (Except by context.) Overall, the narrator was adequate, but sounded more like a basic reading of the text than a performance.
