With limited experience between them, a shortcut meant to ease their hike turns into a nightmare scenario that could cost them their lives. Lost, hungry, and surrounded by forest untouched for millennia, Luke figures things couldn't possibly get any worse. But then they stumble across an old habitation. Ancient artifacts decorate the walls and there are bones scattered upon the dry floors.

The residue of old rites and pagan sacrifice for something that still exists in the forest. Something responsible for the bestial presence that follows their every step. As the four friends stagger in the direction of salvation, they learn that death doesn't come easy among these ancient trees....

wonderful!

This was very interesting to listen to, I liked it very much and I thought it was much better then the movie that was just released.

Awesome

Amazing horror novel for the hiking enthusiast; amazing narrative performance. Loved the pacing and style.

Great until it falls apart

The narration was okay, few complaints there. The first 60-70% of the book was good--the horror landed well. At some point, the story falls apart. I lost my suspension of disbelief; from there forward the book became bland.

Complex!

Strong start with an unexpected switch. The atmosphere is extremely spooky and oppressive. You’ll be wondering how will he survive this...

definitely visceral

I saw the movie a while back, so when I saw the book on audible I purchased it right away. Of course, just like most books that are turned into movies, there were changes made.. for better or for worse.. but one of the things that the movie does not have is how much the main character suffers.. physically. There were definitely times when the descriptions of his wounds, and how they were opened snd reopened time and time again.. were cringing. Like the feeling in your teeth when someone scratches fingernails down a chalkboard. The authors descriptions are very vivid and palpable. If you like folk horror I would give it a chance!

The story is very unique, and quite terrifying, and the voice actor is incredibly talented.

Excellent Narration

Great performance by Davies. I didn't like the book itself as much as I thought I would - it was good, but got to be kind of a slog in the middle.

Best Nevill Book

Adam Nevill has some amazing talent as a horror writer. he takes the reader through an absolute slog of terror and gore. And just when you think there's nowhere for the story to go, another dimension snatches the character up and off you go even further down the rabbit hole until reality is just a word and safety a foreign concept. I never believed I'd be a horror fan, but Nevill's books converted me. If you want a good book that will keep you turning page after page until you feel as exhausted and defeated by the sheer terror of what lurks in the dark as those in the story are, pick up one of his books. And brace yourself. It's going to get weird.

Immersive, Brilliant, and Hair-Raising

Matthew Lloyd Davies was the perfect choice to narrate this novel by the great Adam Nevill. He adds such a richness to this story, already deeply unsettling, and ratchets up the unease,

This was the first of Adam Nevill's books I've read, and it's so wonderful to revisit it in audio with a master narrator.
