Publisher's summary

Rejoin fantasy’s most deadly and dysfunctional mercenaries in the sequel to debut sensation THE BLACK HAWKS.

Bound by oath and honour, Vedren Chel found himself drawn to the heart of a deadly rebellion. With him stood the mercenaries of the Black Hawk Company, who were only ever in it for the money.

But the uprising failed. Now, Chel and the sell-sword Rennic languish in prison, watching as their comrades are taken one by one for execution.

A daring escape will set them free, but with the combined forces of vengeful church and voracious crown arrayed against them, Chel and the Black Hawks must embark on a desperate search for new allies.

Journeying from frozen wastes to towering cities, from drug-riddled fleapits to opulent palaces, THE RIGHTEOUS is the thrilling and riotous second adventure from one of fantasy’s most exciting new voices.

Critic reviews

‘Immensely entertaining’

PRAISE FOR THE BLACK HAWKS:

‘Reminds me of Abercrombie’s THE BLADE ITSELF’
Nicholas Eames, author of KINGS OF THE WYLD

‘Refreshing and entertaining, like a cross between Nicholas Eames and Joe Abercrombie; THE BLACK HAWKS is simply a joy to read’
Peter McLean, author of PRIEST OF BONES

‘Wragg captures the classic fantasy spirit of adventure and exploration, wraps it with stabbed backs and cannibals and gifts it to you on a bed of action’
Ed McDonald, author of BLACKWING

‘Everyone loves a good mercenary tale, but THE BLACK HAWKS offers more besides: a protagonist who's refreshingly rubbish at fighting, a supporting cast who'd be fascinating if they were just standing around in a supermarket, and an author who knows when to dodge cliches, and when to jump in and splash like a kid in a puddle’
Nate Crowley, author of 100 BEST VIDEO GAMES (THAT NEVER EXISTED)

‘Check out THE BLACK HAWKS – it’s full of fun characters, mercenary antics, twists, turns, and contains my favourite fantasy lemon’
Peter Newman, Gemmell Award-winning author of THE VAGRANT and THE DEATHLESS

‘A remarkably assured debut…I can’t wait to see what happens next’
Anna Stephens, author of GODBLIND

If you like joe Abercrombie

You will feel right at home here with this band of smart mouthed mercs. Also Colin’s reading of the book is absolutely outstanding. I loved this tale and I’m looking forward to more david Wragg in the future

Little funky at the end, but great book.

The ending got a bit fanciful, but still a good, entertaining book. Narrator was amazing.

Worth a listen.

I think Colin Mace is a fantastic narrator. The story here is good. The narration ultimately (for me) makes it a fun listen. Both books are worth a shot.

Loved this book so much

If your a fan of Abercrombie and Sanderson you’ll more than likely enjoy this Duo-logy. That’s right tho, not a trilogy unfortunately. But yeah it’s damn good I promise just listen to it.

Great Series

This is a great series for anyone who enjoys dramatic, yet comedic, witty adventures. The reader, who I wasn't fond of at first, is amazing. He has brought life to all these characters in a way that is so enjoyable to listen to. I highly recommend this series.

I liked this one, until the end.

This was a fun adventure with complex and likeable characters. I missed the first book because the recording was too difficult for me to listen to so I jumped into this one without the back story and was fine catching up. Although there was some missing information from the first book, it was easy to get the main points and up to speed.

I enjoyed the story and the characters and their adventures and struggles and how they delt with them. I was looking forward to getting into this series and continuing with these characters and their adventures right up until the last couple chapters. I'm not a fan of how the story developed and how this book ended. leaving me no interest in continuing the series. It finished heading in a direction I have no interest to follow so unfortunately I will not continue with this series if David Wagg writes anymore of them.

Collin Mace did do an excellent job in the narration and I will look for more books read by him.

Worth finishing

I wished there had been more to this one as there is so much more that could have happened, then again, there still is plenty that can happen and I. glad this particular arc wrapped up as certain indi ideals were annoying and fairly useless by most standards. The characters kept me on my toes and never quite did as I expected. It didn't quite live up to the expectation the first book left, but considering the direction it ends up in...that's inevitable. I think the author wanted to go in another direction so he had to tie up the loose ends in this one. Looking forward to future works.

Fun book

It was a good listen for a commute or a long run. I do not understand the ending though, there seemed to be a lot of loose ends. Maybe that was the point? I wouldn't say it has a happy ending necessarily, or even an ending at all. But like I said, maybe that was intentional, or maybe the author just had to wrap everything up really fast?

TLDR: Worth a listen, don't expect a happy ending with everyone smiling.
