About this listen

There’s no denying that life can be difficult. Simply being human means experiencing emotional and physical pain. None of us escapes dealing with pain, failure, and setbacks, but learning how to practice mindful self-compassion can be life-changing. It comes from the understanding that every human being suffers, that we all want to be happy, and that this commonality connects us with everyone else.

Over the last decade, there has been an international explosion of research on mindfulness. Contemplative practices are being integrated with science and psychology. Researchers are sharing information on the power of inner-directed compassion and its beneficial effects on mental well-being, growth, motivation, relationships, and physical health.

Join expert Laurie Cameron to discover tools - including meditations, exercises, journaling, and in-the-moment practices - that will help you evoke mindfulness and empathy in your everyday life in a way that it becomes your natural response - your new set of habits. As you adopt these practices, you’ll start to see a shift in how you work with stressful life events, as well as how you connect with the shared human experience of loss, challenge, and disappointment.

I was Surprised in a good way!!

Wow, this book took me by surprise. I learned a lot and it has taken me a little off guard. However, I think in the long run, it's a good thing.
This is not going to be easy and will have to listen to it over and over to finally get to a place where i think i can actually do this.

This is one of the free monlthy books offered. I dont think I would have listen to this other wise. Thank you Audible form caring about our mental health and encouraging people to try to expand their minds.

Outlines how & why Self Compassion matters.

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to Laurie's read of her book. Also enjoy her book - The Mindful Day. Self-Compassion - as researched by Kristen Neff - is a much overlooked aspect of mindful and sensible living. Highly recommend.

Thank you, Audible

I just have to say thank you to Audible for offering this as a free January listen. I don’t know that I would have downloaded it otherwise, since I’m super picky about how to spend my monthly credits. But this listen is life changing for me as parent of a teen daughter with anxiety. I am using the practice of self-compassion myself and slowly introducing it to her. I think too many of us are incredibly hard on ourselves as a result of today’s performance expectations, and add to it the pressure of high school success for college admissions and no wonder teen anxiety and depression are on the rise. Parents need to first model and then teach how mistakes are part of life and it’s ok. This audio course is a much needed first step toward this effort. (And it was free!!!)

Easy to listen to but hard to be still.

This is a class, ie. instruction, on being mindful and compassionate with yourself. Exercises are included that increase your ability and awareness of compassion. I was a bit impatient with the exercises which just made me realize my own discomfort with being patient with myself and my struggle with being still. I'll probably attempt this again one day.

Definitely worth the time.

I chose this book because it was one of the free choices for January. I'm glad I didn't read the reviews because I would have passed over a great listen for me. Yes, the author describes not being to go on a trip to Africa and although I may not have missed a trip of that magnitude, I can certainly identify with how disappointed she was. I appreciated her soft soothing voice as the repeated meditations taught me how to do it myself. This may not be everyone's cup of tea but for me, it was life changing.

The Best "Great Courses" book I have purchased

Laurie Cameron's voice is so soothing and perfect for this book. I know I will listen to it many more times. This is the best "Great Courses" audible book I have ever ordered. I will be checking soon to see if she has written or narrated any other authors' books. I highly recommend "The Power of Self-Compassion".

Powerful

This is a book I'll return to again and again. I've already used it for personal practice as well as in group facilitation. The mindfulness exercises are powerful and deep.

This is not a ride or drive and listen book.

My first interest in this book was to understand. Now I will engage with it to experience and then put self-compassion into my daily practice.
