About this listen

A chilling follow-up to the popular true-crime book The Anatomy of Evil.

Revisiting Dr. Michael Stone's groundbreaking 22-level Gradations of Evil Scale, a hierarchy of evil behavior first introduced in the book The Anatomy of Evil, Stone and Dr. Gary Brucato, a fellow violence and serious psychopathology expert, here provide even more detail, using dozens of cases to exemplify the categories along the continuum. The New Evil also presents compelling evidence that, since a cultural tipping-point in the 1960s, certain types of violent crime have emerged that in earlier decades never or very rarely occurred.

The authors examine the biological and psychiatric factors behind serial killing, serial rape, torture, mass and spree murders, and other severe forms of violence. They persuasively argue that, in at least some cases, a collapse of moral faculties contributes to the commission of such heinous crimes, such that "evil" should be considered not only a valid area of inquiry, but, in our current cultural climate, an imperative one. They consider the effects of new technologies and sociological, cultural, and historical factors since the 1960s that may have set the stage for "the new evil."

Critic reviews

"Fascinating, disturbing... Budding criminologists will find this a useful resource for study and contemplation, while true crime enthusiasts will be riveted by the assiduous prodding into the criminal mind." (Publishers Weekly)

Most Evil show in audio form

This book is basically the Most Evil show in audio book format. If you have seen the show and enjoyed that then you will like this. If you have not seen the show you can list to his book and the previous one from Dr. Michael Stone . Great book but would like to hear about cases not already included in the show. Looking forward to seeing any of his future work.

comprehensive.

Vignettes exposing horrorific human behavior and a detailed analysis of disturbed individuals. This is a very graphic novel that exposes the unusual traits of humans which most will never experience, but the information is priceless. get this audible.

Phenomenal

All the stars for Gary Brucato and Micheal Stone. These gentleman have put together a work of art here trying to play itself off as a book. If you are a full blown true crime junkie or even just mildly interested because you watch Law & Order on the weekends, this is where you're gonna get your fix. It's smart, thought provoking, dark and full of all kinds of facts to scare your dinner guests with for the next year or so. Excellent narrator as well. I loved every second of it.

Fantastic deep dive into real evil

Listen to the first one and loved it as much as one can with the context of the book. It’s truly eye opening how evil people can be. So I figured this one would be amazing as well. I wasn’t disappointed at all my only complaint is the seemingly anti gun agenda citing anti gun politicians who know nothing about gun IE saying no one hunts with ARs or AKs when people do and it’s common and citing anti gun advocates like David Hogg. You can talk about guns without pushing an anti gun or pro gun agenda. I still love the Book and will glady recommend it to everyone.

true crime and forensic psychologists must read!

this is an academic, statistical, and psychosocial look at the variability of criminal behavior. the authors discuss the 22 levels of their "gradations of evi" scale. it offers some very interesting insights into how psychopathology, sociopathy, mental illness, and impulsivity affect one's level of "evil" and uses specific, generally well-known offenders as examples in each of the 22 gradations. If you are an aspiring crime writer, lover of true crime novels, and/or are interested in forensic psychology, this is a must-listen!

Best True Crime Book I’ve Read in Years

This book is exactly what I was looking for! Lately I’ve been reading a lot of true crime that was either slow, uninteresting, heavily based on police procedure, or just poorly written.

This book is incredible, intelligent, well researched, informative, thought provoking, and absolutely chilling.

This book details dozens of crimes ranked on their scale of what truly makes an evil person, which is well explained and easy to understand.

The crimes explained in this book are both well known and lesser known, which was engrossing. I feel like after reading this, there are probably 15 cases I would like to look up to see if there are separate books written about them.

Lastly, there were fascinating connections made between modern crimes and the changes to the world/human/women’s rights which I have never fully connected before- but it was mind blowing.

I highly recommend this book to both avid readers and knowledgeable true crime buffs and readers who are new to the genre. It’s fantastic.

Excellent overall analysis with serious flaws

Overall, excellent. However, MAJOR ERROR -Video games, and or a lack of religion have been proven NOT CONTRIBUTIVE to violent behavior.
I feel that suggesting this in anyway reduces the validity of the overall text.

WARNING!!!.....

This book is not for the faint of heart. With that said, this book is one of the best audio books I own in this specific category, which for sake of this review I'll name" true crime books authored by forensic psychiatrists or criminal profilers".

This book far surpasses any book I've read by Douglas, Ressler or Hazelwood and that's because the cases in this book and not the same old regurgitated cases we hear over and over . The last two books I bought from Douglas , I was so bored I had to return one of them.

The other was the same high profile cases he writes about in all his books. The other profilers sugar coat the cases they pick and use the rest of the book to talk about how smart they are as profilers.

This book has really interesting cases , some I've never heard of, which is rare for the reasons I stated above. The cases that are well known , the "regurgitated"cases, at least have info added that I have never heard before and they do go into graphic detail but the delivery is done by a very pleasant sounding narrator.

This book is extremely graphic and extremely good. True crime lovers, you WILL NOT be disappointed!

Enjoyed thoroughly, thank you!
