About this listen

True confession - or false?

Investigator (and former nun) Christine Bennett is appalled when a young woman claims to be the natural daughter of Sister Joseph, beloved Superior at St. Stephen's and Chris's dearest friend. But after the girl is murdered, all the evidence leads the police to believe she was telling the truth - and that Sister Joseph is the prime suspect.

Can evidence ever lie? Chris prays that it can. But as she frantically searches for the link between the anonymous woman who gave away her newborn two decades ago and a brutal murder this Mother's Day, it seems only a miracle can save Sister Joseph from a life behind bars.

Not All Mysteries Solved in This One

A big fan of this series, I found this one to be my least favorite for a couple reasons. First of all, I was disappointed about the anti-gun comments made about Christine and Jack's neighbor, who had a handgun, as well as a permit for it. There were numerous comments made about the neighbor and his wife regarding gun ownership and how aghast that they were that a gun was in their household. Given that Jack is a police officer and lawyer, and Chris has solved many murders, this was out of left field and in my opinion, more for political correctness than anything else. It had no bearing on the actual story. The young woman who knocked at Chris and Jack's door, insisting that Sister Joseph was her birth mother, was welcomed into their home. Chris helped her, investigating what she claimed and sticking by her friend, Sister Joseph, which took her many places in search of the truth. Chris found out a lot of things, but never what she initially went in search of. I love the closeness of the nuns at St. Stephen's, Chris, Jack and their little son, Eddie. I've grown to love all the characters in this series. But this book just doesn't hold together for me. Chris and Jack have two neighbors in a bitter fight over a tree. The young woman staying with them gets terribly upset over the tree incident, because she LOVES trees, yet she gets up the next morning and chops down the tree with Jack's axe . . . and is found shot to death. Although Chris eventually solves the mystery of who shot the young woman (who had been posing as a nun), she doesn't uncover the question that the young college student came in search of. I still adore this series and will finish it up, since this is, so far the only one that hasn't been up to snuff.

Another pleasurable read

Another satisfying murder mystery in this wonderful series of Ann Bennett. Wish she had written a dozen more in the series. Always a pleasure watching Kicks life progress.
