About this listen

From number-one New York Times best-selling authors Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu comes the second book in the Eldest Curses series and a thrilling adventure for High Warlock Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood, for whom a death-defying mission into the heart of evil is not just a job; it’s also a romantic getaway. The Lost Book of the White is a Shadowhunters novel.

Life is good for Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood. They’re living together in a fabulous loft; their warlock son, Max, has started learning to walk; and the streets of New York are peaceful and quiet - as peaceful and quiet as they ever are, anyway.

Until the night that two old acquaintances break into Magnus’s apartment and steal the powerful Book of the White. Now Magnus and Alec will have to drop everything to get it back. They need to follow the thieves to Shanghai, they need to call some backup to accompany them, and they need a babysitter. Also, someone has stabbed Magnus with a strange magical weapon that is changing the very nature of his powers.

Fortunately, their backup consists of Clary, Jace, Isabelle, and newly minted Shadowhunter Simon. In Shanghai, they learn that a much darker threat awaits them. Magnus’s magic is growing unstable, and if they can’t stop the demons flooding into the city, they might have to follow them all the way back to the source - to the very realm of the dead.

I love Cassandra Clare!! but Dr. Wu was not good

I absolutely LOVED this book. one of Cassandra's best so far, and waaaayyy better than the Red Scrolls. but BD Wong wasn't a very good narrator.. He's amazing in JP, don't get me wrong. His voices for the characters were so off. he made Jace and Simon sound like annoying sassy 13 year Olds from a west coast soap opera! it was rough. I got through it, but man it would have been a much better listen with a better narrator.

narrative was whinny

i loved the story so much but i had to fight through it to listen as the narrator botched Simon, Clart, and Jace. he did fine with Magnus and Alec , his accents were spot on, but he made the other 3 sound as if they were whinny teenage girls and that bugged me ALOT

Not happy with the narration

I rarely review books, but felt it necessary this time. I love the Shadowhunters books but really struggled with this one. I like this book, but hate the narration. He didn't get the characters personalities right AT ALL!!! If you are a fan and have listened to the other books this one is hard to listen to. The narrator obviously did NOT know anything about the characters before reading them. Shame on the producers for this oversite. He even mispronounced a few names. I don't dislike BD Wong as a narrator! But there were some huge mistakes made here

I adore Alec & Magnus together!

I just love the world Clare has created and she keeps bringing us back in with new stories to tell. We've been with these characters so long, they feel like friends. It's the best escape!
I love Alec & Magnus growing as a couple. Getting to see Clary, Jace, Simon & Izzy is a treat.
I loved BD Wong's narration again. I know some reviews didn't like his interpretation of beloved characters like Jace & Clary, but I was fine with that because his Magnus is spot on & his Alec and ShinYung are great too.

Great story, terrible narration

BD Wong does an OK job on a handful of characters but most of them sound terrible.

Good story

I am very fond of the Alec and Magnus stories by Wesley Chu. I was disappointed by the audio quality of this audiobook. There was lots of static. Also, the narrator mispronounced Maryse’s name. Not a big deal but it was a little jarring after listening to the rest of the shadowhunter audiobooks .

voices

I liked it besides his he portrayed the women's voices making Clary sound whiny and bummed out 24/7

C.C delivers as usual!

The story lines gave all the impact we are use to. To spend time with characters we've grown to love and we know so well. The twists and hints and backwards glances to things that already occurred is really nice. The climax battle was a little meh. My only complaint was BD Wong whom I love from Law and Order and HTGAWM he destroyed our characters. I don't recall his reading to be so horrid last time. His perspective was so off it ruined it and mispronounced names like come on! Just like an acting gig research your characters a simple Google would have sufficed. Jace is not some vain Surfer dude, Alec is a bad ass w/some insecurities but nonetheless I won't discuss what he did to my Simon. When I finally caught on to his storyline(which broke me and I could have sat in that feeling w/Simon) I was like What the what?! . I'd rather READ💀 the next book.
