Story
Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in.

You'll be tempted to dig further into Arapaho history after this great book from Coel. Wow. I SO hope it is really fiction and not based on facts. Did I say, 'Wow'?

Murdered Priest, Buried Secrets, and the Arapaho
This series just gets better and better. When Joseph returns to the St. Francis mission on the Wind River Reservation after 35 years, to help Father O’Malley minister to the Arapaho Indians, no sooner than he arrives, a call comes in from a dying woman. Father Joseph goes, instead of Father O’Malley to give last rites to the woman, and is shot dead. Many think that the actual target was Father O’Malley, since few knew the old priest, and ever fewer knew that he had returned to the mission. In addition to the favorites from the series, Father O’Malley’s niece comes to visit him in The Lost Bird, playing an intricate role. The visiting movie star, Sharon David, who is convinced that she is of Indian decent has hired Vicky Holden to find her birth parents. Full of native American lore, mystery and rich details of the human condition of the people I’ve come to care about, this is one of the best so far in the series. Excellent conclusion to the murder investigation and to the search for the actress’s search birth parents.

Well done
I found myself siding with the angry Native American who wanted all white religious priests gone from the reservation. The Indigenous people had/have their own spiritual beliefs and didn’t/don’t need Catholic teachings forced upon them. Who is to decide that the white man’s ways are better. I don’t know if I would choose another book by this author.
