About this listen

Pisa, May 1364.

Sir William Gold is looking forward to a lucrative career as a hired sword in the endless warring between Italy's city states. But when a message comes from the Grand Master of the Hospitaliers, William is forced to leave his dreams of fame and fortune behind him.

The Hospitaliers are gathering men for a crusade, and Sir William must join them. Yet before they set out for the holy land, the knights face deadly adversaries much closer to home....

In the twisting politics of Italy, no one can be trusted. And there are those who would be pleased to see the crusade fail....

Can Sir William and his knights survive this impossible mission into the heart of the enemy?

But the second book is dull by comparison. I guess I enjoyed it well enough, but the story did not engage me like the first. Rather slow paced.

The first one was so good..,

Very good book. Love, war, and chivalry. The basics perfectly and uniquely done, once again.

Always very good!

Cameron has a knack for great detail but not too much. It weaves a fine tapestry. William Gold is heroic but has the advantage of humility and maturity to curb his bravado with hindsight and introspection.

Another great tales well told.

Def worth a listen or read, 10/10 would rec. I really like how everything is progressing and the story.

Great book, great audio

Narration is truly excellent, and a compelling story. Perhaps not quite as good as book 1, still very good.

Great book!

Really enjoyed this second volume, the personal toll such a life would take is well told without becoming burdensome.

Great second volume

Not as strong as the first book in the series… at first. But once it gets going it’s quite good. This is the last one narrated by Saul Reichlin. I’ve listened to some of the Pete Nobles and it’s not even close. Saul understands the characters and the story, it’s like he was meant read these. So just double check the narrator to be sure you have the “right” version.

Good Solid adventure, takes a little but to it hits stride
