About this listen

“You can’t have Fun Dip with a person you actually care about losing.”

Maci Lawson has a few goals for her junior year of college. She wants to excel in her courses, live it up with her roommate in their new apartment, and break away from her habit of relationships and keeping old options open. This year she’s looking for a hookup, and her new friend Jaxon might just check all her boxes—until he becomes someone she wants more with. When their friendship trumps taking that chance, Maci stumbles into a guy who’s the spitting image of everything Jaxon warned her about. Now, Maci is caught between a guy she's fallen for and a guy who meets her hookup criteria. Unfortunately for her, they aren’t the same person.

Jaxon Hayes doesn’t do relationships or the morning after. Getting in with girls, keeping some around, and leaving no-strings-attached is his specialty, and he has no plans of changing that. So when he finds out his new friend Maci is looking for a hookup, he sees no reason why he can’t step into the role—until he spends two months in the friend zone and realizes that Maci is too important to risk losing. Stuck between wanting more and knowing he shouldn’t, Jaxon ends a scenario he’s all too familiar with. But when his choice to be the good guy results in someone else sleeping around with the first girl he’s ever cared about, he finds himself questioning everything.

One night was all it took for their lives to intertwine in ways neither of them expected. Eventually, both of them are faced with deciding what’s more important—going after the one you want, or proving you’re the hookup type.

The Hookup Type is a steamy college romance that is the first in a planned series. This book contains strong language and mature themes. For a full list of CWs, see the author's website.

Loved almost every bit of this book!!!

I say almost…keep reading…

The college lifestyle is definitely what this book is all about. Discovering yourself - not just career oriented but really what you want in life and a relationship - should you choose a relationship lifestyle.

The characters are very likable - even the jerky-type characters that some readers, I know, have definitely been turned off early within this book. I promise, get past the first 3 chapters within Jaxon’s POV you’ll see the softer side of him!

I picked up this book for multiple reasons - 1) it’s a debut 2) It’s based in Ohio so the settings I’m very familiar with, and 3) I love dual POV, especially RomCom.

This book has become a comfort book for me, no lie. I dig a softer side to the macho-man and Jaxon definitely has a softer side (although we don’t see it for a little while). I swooned early on with the first interaction he has with Maci.

The only reason I did not give this story a 5 star is because there’s a small plot-hole - and that’s because this is supposed to be the first in a series of books! One can gather what’s taking place but I wanted to know MORE about Jaxon’s upbringing. Outside of that plot-hole within this first book tot he series, I was in love with this book entirely, and I cannot wait until the next one comes out.

Also, the narrator is top-notch. The voice of Conner threw me off a little bit but once I got past that little bit - this narrator is definitely a new favorite for me!

Loved the touch of throw back

What a cute and adorable, love story I feel like Every girl goes through this once in their life, at least they should, to figure out the right person for them. This was a sllllllllooooooooooooow burn, so be prepared, but also going to open minded, knowing that they really really did not want to ruin their friendship, and I can understand that.

Awesome!!

Definitely a college love story!! I enjoyed this story since I’m from Ohio and knew a lot of the areas in the story. Made it seem more real for me. Also loved the POV from Jaxon to maci. Getting both of their inner dialogues and feelings were great. Definitely recommend!!

Fun college rom-com

This book made me miss my younger college years! I think the reason I connected with this book is because I was a lot like Maci, and I went for guys like Jaxson over and over when I was in my early twenties. Ah party nostalgia!

Maci is sick of relationships and just want to hook up. She meets Jaxson and they have instant friendship chemistry. Jaxson is the ultimate F boy who doesn't do the morning after. When they finally have the opportunity to hook up, it's Jaxson that calls it off, realizing he doesn't want to lose Maci and their friendship.

Determined to find someone to have fun with, Maci meets an even BIGGER F boy, who just happens to be Jaxson's best friend (she didn't learn this until it was too late). So now Jaxon has to watch as his best friend Bryson is getting the hook up with the girl he really likes, and he's kicking himself in the butt for not being with her when he had the chance.

Jaxson is terribly unlikable in the beginning, and this is by design! He had to be written as cringy as possible so he could redeem himself in the end. I know there are people who DNF'd the book because of how much they disliked him, but please give him a shot. I think the fact that so many people found him so terrible, myself included, is a testament to the author's writing.

I think this book is geared toward an early 20's college audience. There are a lot of pop culture references and a lot of language that I hear my teenager and his friends using that I don't connect with being a nearly 40 year old mom. For me it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book, but I can see how it might for older readers who don't connect or who feel like these characters should be hanging out with their children. The language used by Jaxon, Bryson, and other male characters in reference to women can definitely be offensive to some, which again tells me this book is targeted for an audience younger than myself.

There were a few loose ends that didn't get answers, especially about Jaxon's family situation. In the authors note at the end it says there will be two more books in this series, so I'm going to assume those answers will be important for more character development and drama in later books. It certainly has the potential to provide lots of juicy drama for Maci and Jaxon to wade through together!

Overall I did really enjoy this book. It made me fondly reminiscent of my early 20's when this is very similar to how I lived and partied (and dated, ugh!). So if stories about the college party scene and the drama that comes with it are your thing, I would recommend this book. I will be reading the next book when it comes out. I have to know where Maci and Jaxon go from here!

I loved this book!

This book was fun and adventurous. I loved how the main characters felt like real people and didn’t apologize for who they were and what they wanted. Great book, I highly recommend it.
