About this listen

The Good Shepherd is now a major motion picture, Greyhound, scripted by and starring Tom Hanks, directed by Aaron Schneider, and produced by Gary Goetzman.

A convoy of 37 merchant ships is ploughing through icy, submarine-infested North Atlantic seas during the most critical days of World War II, when the German submarines had the upper hand and Allied shipping was suffering heavy losses.

In charge is Commander George Krause, an untested veteran of the US Navy. Hounded by a wolf pack of German U-boats, he faces 48 hours of desperate peril trapped the bridge of the ship. Exhausted beyond measure, he must make countless and terrible decisions as he leads his small fighting force against the relentless U-boats.

My dad did Desteoyer escort duty in WWII. This book just solidified how much he and all those men were heros.

A well written account of the bravery, teamwork and discipline of our Allied sailors on convoy escort in the North Atlantic during WW II.

Well performed.

Very Well Done

Its a classic World War 2 premise but it's really a story about character and duty. The weight of responsibility and what it takes to see yourself and those you lead through mortal peril. Captain Strauss is a humble but determined man who finds himself under constant pressure and faced with impossible decisions and watching him navigate this world internally through the prism of his distinct character makes for a fascinating listen.

A book I hope to share with my son.

Recently made into a film by and starring Tom Hanks this is a taut and authentic portrayal of convoy warfare in early WW 2.

Great Forester

It is hard not to visualize Tom Hanks as you listen to this story. While the movie helps to provide the mind a picture of the action, the book fills in the inner man as he performs his duty.

Marvelous study of combat at sea.

I was enthralled by this novel of World War 2 Destroyers defending a convoy against a Nazi wolf pack of submarines. A deadly game of anticipating the invisible enemies next move. (If you have seen the 1957 film ``Enemy Below'' with Robert Mitchum and Kurt Jurgens, you know the cat and mouse game that must be played.)
``The Good Shepherd'' is exceptional in that it not only tells of the various attacks by the subs, but it delves into the mind of the U.S. Captain and shows the mental and physical strain he suffers while protecting the convoy and keeping command of the other protecting Destroyers.
The narrator, Eddardo Ballerini, does excellent work in conveying the tension and thoughts of the captain. At times, I felt like I was on the Bridge watching the action. For me, only the spoke word can make me so immersed in a book. Thanks to Audible for making this book available.

I had a Navy career in submarines. Every detail was excellent. His words were so accurately selected just as in “Hornblower.” Not much more to add, except that the presentation was excellent.
