February 1943. As the balance of the war slowly shifts in Britain's favour, Lieutenant-Commander Steven Marshall brings his battle-scarred submarine into home port. Captain and crew are exhausted after 14 months' continuous service, but for most there can be no thought of leave. If the enemy collapse in North Africa is to be exploited, every experienced man will be needed. Marshall must return to the Mediterranean, but this time to a very different kind of war.

Historia
The novel that launched the astonishing career of one of the 20th century's greatest writers of action and suspense - an acclaimed classic of heroism and the sea in World War II. The story of men who rose to heroism, and then to something greater, HMS Ulysses takes its place alongside The Caine Mutiny and The Cruel Sea as one of the classic novels of the navy at war. It is the compelling story of Convoy FR77 to Murmansk - a voyage that pushes men to the limits of human endurance.

Historia
In 1942, Norman Hanson learned to fly the Royal Navy's newest fighter: the US-built Chance Vought Corsair. Fast, rugged, and demanding to fly, it was an intimidating machine. But in the hands of its young Fleet Air Arm pilots, it also proved to be a lethal weapon. Posted to the South Pacific aboard HMS Illustrious, Hanson and his squadron took the fight to the Japanese. Facing a desperate and determined enemy, Kamikaze attacks, and the ever-present dangers of flying off a pitching carrier deck, death was never far away.

The Solomon Islands was where the Allied war machine finally broke the Japanese empire. Using his own experiences, log books, and correspondence with other U-boat crewmen, Hans Goebeler offers rich and personal details about what life was like in the German Navy under Hitler. Since his first and last posting was to U-505, Goebeler's perspective of the crew, commanders, and war patrols paints a vivid and complete portrait unlike any other to come out of the Kriegsmarine. He witnessed it all, from deadly sabotage efforts that almost sunk the boat to the tragic suicide of the only U-boat commander who took his life during World War II.

the courage and humanity of the protagonist
The evolution of Young Kelly from a cynical, insecure boy, estranged from his patriarchy and mother into the courageous yet modest Captain of men was a beautiful, yet masterfully written, believable story.
I loved the 2 supporting characters as much. The loyal and lovable Garello was like Samwise to his Frodo in their affection and friendship.
But the Young teenage beauty snd childhood playmate Charlie was as rich in character.

Great Navy Tale
Young Kelly Maguire must prove himself as an officer in the Royal Navy of WW1. He rises to the challenge and starts his slow rise through the ranks. A compelling story with enough history, action, and romance to hold my interest. Narration is excellent including good work on nautical terms and giving each character a distinctive voice.
