About this listen

Six teens murdered. A suspect behind bars. A desperate father. In a case this shadowy, the truth is easy to hide.

Psychiatrist Dr. Gwen Moore is an expert on killers. She’s spent a decade treating California’s most depraved predators and unlocking their motives - predators much like the notorious Bloody Heart serial killer, whose latest teenage victim escaped and then identified local high school teacher Randall Thompson as his captor. The case against Thompson as the Bloody Heart Killer is damning - and closed, as far as Gwen and the media are concerned. If not for one new development...

Defense attorney Robert Kavin is a still-traumatized father whose own son fell prey to the BH Killer. Convinced of Thompson’s innocence, he steps in to represent him. Now Robert wants Gwen to interview the accused, create a psych profile of the killer and his victims, and help clear his client’s name.

As Gwen and Robert grow closer and she dives deeper into the investigation, grave questions arise. So does Gwen’s suspicion that Robert is hiding something - and that he might not be the only one with a secret.

Had potential but ultimately just meh.

This story had potential, it really did. I think the story needed developed more and some of the plot holes filled. The two main characters fell flat for me, I did not feel the sexual tension at all. Maybe if the characters had been a little more developed, I might of liked them a little more. It was an easy listen, the narrator was easy to listen to.

Don't read if you are an attorney or psychiatrist

Honestly, if you are in either professions, you will probably be offended by this book. I am not talking about inaccuracies, which exist in almost all fictions written by people outside of these professions, but big taboos, which are basically what this story is based upon. The author does discuss doctor-patient / attorney client confidentiality, but it feels like it is based on a desk-top research. They are brushed away too quickly and too easily.

The characters were built out quite hastily -- not very believable in my view. There are so many characters that exist only for the purpose of the protagonists to develop a romantic relationship. The male protagonist's pain for losing his son is very unrealistic. If you are a parent, you know nobody behaves that way for losing a child. This is a romance more than it is a thriller, which is fine, but maybe don't use a father who just lost his son to be the target of a wet dream?

Oh also, it feels like the female protagonist is the only psychiatrist in L.A. -- how did all her patients end up having something to do with a big case -- or rather, if that is the way the author wants it to happen, maybe set the story up in a small town with population of 500, with one lawyer and one psychiatrist?

Good mystery but cringe writing

The mystery was mostly pretty interesting and twisty, but the writing especially from the female perspective was pretty cringe to the point where it pulled me out of the story and made me want it to be over faster.

Great story telling *SPOILERS*

I enjoyed this novel. The narrator did an amazing job as well. I get put off when a narrator puts on a poorly deep mimic of what a character of the opposite sex should sound like (one of my biggest pet peeves), but Susan Dalian did amazing.

The story was great as well; very suspenseful and "true crime" feeling without the extreme gore. My only issue is the end of the book. Without spoiling it completely, I just wanna say if someone tried to kill me, the last thing I'd do is meet them for drinks like old chums.

Exciting

Loved this beginning to end!!
The plot was full of twist and several potential suspects. The end was not what I expected it was so much better.
