Publisher's summary

Lew Carney, a loner who traverses the deserts between the Sierras and the Rockies, and makes his living sharking cards, is not superstitious. But when a wagon, pulled by eight silent men, appears out of the darkness near his campfire, then disappears into thin air by dawn, Carney fears he may be in the grip of the supernatural.

When he finds the body of a man shot in the back, Carney looks for answers in nearby Cayuse, a gold-rush town where everyone scoffs at his "tall tale" - everyone but a stunningly beautiful woman with a steady gaze and an unnamable fear in her eyes.

Editorial reviews

The Ghost Wagon is a gripping old western supernatural story, originally written by prolific former pulp author Max Brand, in 1921.

Performed like a weathered and enlightened ranch hand by Slate Peters, the story concerns Lew Carney, a roving gambler and gun enthusiast who’s neither a hero nor a villain, but perhaps a little of both. When Carney see what he believes to be a haunting apparition by the light of his campfire, the mystical experience sends the cowboy on a quest for truth.

An admirable precursor to the western literary richness of Cormac McCarthy.

Critic reviews

"[A] haunting tale of murder, deception and conspiracy that sets gambler and gunman Lew Carney on a chilling and dangerous quest for truth." ( Publishers Weekly)

One of the best narrators for westerns

I try and buy ever book Slate Peters reads. This story is decent, but it becomes excellent because of this narrator. Ghostly.
