About this listen

If you're checking out this audiobook, there is a good chance you - or someone you care about - have experienced some of the more damaging consequences of genuine narcissism. Maybe you didn't realize you were dealing with a narcissist at first, but the pain and damage caused by this selfish, arrogant, condescending, and domineering person might have driven you to search for answers about what was going on, and how to deal with them. As you searched online or in books, you collected the conventional wisdom available, but feel there is still more to it.

While the Bible does not use the exact term "narcissism" - a word from Greek mythology - it most certainly speaks to the subject. In fact, if you look carefully, you might be surprised at just how much and how directly Scripture speaks about narcissism and narcissistic people.

The First Will Be Last: A Biblical Perspective on Narcissism is just what the title says - an A-Z look at the Biblical perspective on these toxic people; including who they are, how they got that way, and how to deal with them. From key words to Biblical case studies, it will unlock a new perspective and provide a framework in your search for truth.

Unique Approach. Sound Advice.

I have been obsessed with the topic of narcissism since I came to identify it as the source of the toxic environment I grew up in. But in all my study I've never come across a more exhaustive study and nothing that extensively explores the subject from a Biblical perspective. The authors delve into the subject from every angle - identifying characteristics, root causes, co-dependant outcomes, practical solutions and uniquely, the Christian's responsibility, all from a Biblical perspective. He is direct, without being harsh and compassionate without being soft. True wisdom from the Holy Spirit! As a Christian we tend to either silently suffer, earnestly praying for change or, on the other end of the spectrum, "demonize" anything we see contrary to God and walk away from it. Unfortunately, neither of these approaches effectively addresses the problem. Secular leaders in this subject offer practical advice but everyone admits that there is little clinical data on the subject since few narcissists will ever go to counseling. ("Who me? No, you're the one that needs counseling!"). The authors went to the One resource that has been tried and true for centuries to seek answers. In Ecclesiastes Chapter 3, Solomon said there is nothing new under the sun. We gave it new name but the condition is as old as time and this book points out that God has a lot to say about it! I would highly recommend it for every one struggling with toxic relationships especially those of Christian faith but also for anyone looking for another perspective on the subject. The recommendations are sound for all regardless of the Biblical approach used to arrive at them.

Pretty good but just grin and bear it?

As the spouse of a covert narcissistic wife who is duped into marrying this abusive, psychotic person I came to this book hoping for godly answers. While I can certainly appreciate the biblical insight into narcissism he didn’t really have an answer besides endure the abuse. Scripture certainly does tell us to endure persecution for Christ’s sake but not to simply endure abuse just for abuse sake. The author goes so far as to say “get creative“ in being abused by the narcissist. Get creative? How about get away? In Proverbs Solomon says it’s better to live on the roof then with a contrary woman. What do you means is it’s better to be homeless! That means get out of there. God hates divorce no doubt. But God hates the abuse of his children more. And God certainly works all things together for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purpose. But that does not mean he has called us to simply endure abuse at the hands of a sadistic abuser. Likely, he has called us to this abusive relationship to be able to help others who have gone through in it and have been cast aside by the church. So that we can help others going through similar situations. And whoever says “I don’t see abuse as a reason for divorce in the Bible“ go and learn what this means “I desire mercy and not a sacrifice.”

Useful insight into narcissism

I found this book to be full of great examples of how narcissism has existed for all of time. The author does a fantastic job of incorporating struggles we may face today dealing with narcissists compared to scripture.

There is an excellent balance of scripture and real-life examples. He shares insight on how to address people with this disorder best while keeping our pride, integrity, and walk with God intact.

My thoughts on it to sum it up- pray to God for direction on how to handle your situation best and then trust the wisdom you receive from God, moving forward accordingly.

Pray for the narcissist. We hold little to no power, but God can move mountains. Put your faith fully in God and know that there is always a bigger plan that is unknown to us but very well known to our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ 🙏🏼❤️

Incredible book!

This book comes from a Christian worldview of narcissism. It will definitely help (the Christ follower) with dealing with the narcissist(s) in their life. The author backs every insight, example, and instruction with the Word of God.

Very Helpful

I have been listening to secular books on the topic for a year not quite finding the biblical perspective I’ve been looking for. This book does a very good job of laying out truth and responsibility.

Informative

Loved it! Insightful. Most memorable in this book is God's love for all, the condition of our heart, & how God can correct & heal if we're willing to receive.

Easy to follow

When I first started reading this book, I wasn’t very hopeful about my situation but I love the way this book wraps up and that anything is possible with God intervening. I thought it was an overall great book.

Biblical Worldview

So helpful! Explained things thoroughly, relating as well as differentiating pop psychology’s attempts to explain narcissism. My favorite parts were toward then end. There is a lot of peace that can come from reading this book.
