About this listen
This brand-new unabridged audio book of The Fellowship of the Ring, the first part of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic adventure, The Lord of the Rings, is read by the BAFTA award-winning actor, director and author, Andy Serkis.
In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power – the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion.
Thus begins J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic tale of adventure, which continues in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

Story
After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

A natural storyteller and raconteur in his own right - just listen to Paddle Your Own Canoe and Gumption - actor, comedian, carpenter, and all-around manly man Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) brings his distinctive baritone and a fine-tuned comic versatility to Twain's writing. In a knockout performance, he doesn't so much as read Twain's words as he does rejoice in them, delighting in the hijinks of Tom - whom he lovingly refers to as a "great scam artist" and "true American hero".

Andy Serkis knocks it out of the park.
He keeps you entrhalled from beginning to end of his rendition of Tolkien's timeless classic.
He reads the story with such enthusiasm and the voice acting is world class, bravo!

The best way to experience this story
For several years as a teen, my yearly resolution was to finish the print version of this trilogy. I stopped at the Two Towers and gave up. Years later I discovered audiobooks and seeing this read by Golum himself I had to try it. What a ride. This is by far the best audiobook performance I have ever experienced. He SINGS the songs from the book. I cannot believe how good this was to read.

Great performance
Amazing hearing Andy read these books, but could use a singing coach. He also sounds more comfortable further into the story.
