Sorry Frank

This is the only Frank Herbert book I have ever been disappointed in. The plot was decent but not explored all that well and the characters weren’t written in a way that made me care about them

One of my favorite books from Herbert.

Beautiful writing from Herbert. I reread from time to time just to experience such precise and descriptive writing

If you liked Dune, you will like this one also.

Awesomeness, I love Frank Herbert's style. Reminds me of Dune so much. The plot, the depth, the intrigue.

intersting story, excellent presentation

Frank Herbert is an excellent story teller and this is another example. The story is deep enough to keep your interest and flows at an even pace. Scott Brick does another wonderful job of bringing the book to life.

Great read of a lesser known novel

Would you consider the audio edition of The Dosadi Experiment to be better than the print version?

No. Analog beats digital every time. Sorry.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Dosadi Experiment?

The Gowachin Trial. Lots of elaborate legal maneuvering through an alien legal system by a canny human in a crazy, multi-layered society that spans a galaxy.

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

Jorj X. McKie, the main character, Keela Jedric as well. Scott Brick is kinda my audio book hero. He could read ramen ingredients and make it sound interesting.

Any additional comments?

If you like Dune, you may well like the Jorj McKie novels. Herbert's overarching themes of interdependence, ecology, feints-within-feints and real science are all on display in The Dosadi Experiment. Moreover, it is a great premise and a great page-turner of a novel. Somewhere between detective novel and galactic action adventure, The Dosadi Experiment is well suited to audio and this one rocks.

Interesting, but too many leaps.

Any additional comments?

I think the story was conceptually extremely interesting, but there are many points where you're forced to make large leaps— plot points happen without explanation. It feels as if you're supposed to accept the super powers of a character, that just appear over the course of a week, without ever delineating what those powers are (really). Different things happen that are just explained away as obviously within the purview of the new powers. It just felt a little forced at points.

Maybe the Rats Are Conducting Tests on You . . .

What did you like best about this story?

While SciFi, this book plays out a lot like a spy novel. It is very heady and psychological with all the intrigue of undercover plants and double agents. Characters believe they are fully in control, only to find out that they've been played and all of their actions anticipated.

Not everyone will enjoy the ambiguous way the story unfolds or the lack of direct explanation of what is happening, but for those that do, this novel is quite remarkable. The court room scenes where the attorneys have to believe enough in there clients to put there life on the line with their clients are especially entertaining.
