About this listen

Knives Out meets Dirty Dancing....

Set in the Catskill Mountains, The Disappearance of Trudy Solomon is a complex, cold-case whodunnit with a cast of eccentric, yet authentic characters, each one of them hiding one secret too many.

In the waning days of the Catskills hotel era, Stanley and Rachel Roth, the owners of The Cuttman Hotel, were practically dynasty — third generation proprietors of a sprawling resort with a grand reputation. The glamorous and gregarious matriarch, Rachel. The cunning and successful businessman, Stan. Four beautiful children. A perfect family deserving of respect and loyalty. Or so it seemed.

Fast forward 40 years. When skeletal remains are found on the side of the road, the disappearance of Trudy Solomon, a coffee shop waitress at the Cuttman in 1978, is reinvestigated. The Roths no longer have the clout they once enjoyed. Each member of the Roth family holds a clue to the case, but getting them to confess what they know will require Detective Susan Ford to come face-to-face with a family she hoped never to see again. The case catapults Susan back to 1978 — opening old wounds as she tracks down forgotten friends and unreliable witnesses. In the course of the investigation, she uncovers two murders, a blackmail scheme, and a kidnapping. And everything Susan thought she knew about her life in 1978 turns out to be wrong.

For mystery lovers who crave stories with twisty plots, a bit of wit, and crackling dialog, this book will have you wondering who did what to whom until the bitter end.

Political Virtue Signaling

I would have returned this book early on when the author describes a workplace bully indicating he wears a MEGA hat. However, I returned a book recently, and as an audible plus member don't want to abuse the system. Also, having read goodread reviews, no one mentioned the extreme left view point of the author. Living close to the George Floyd disaster, and yes it was hinted at in the book, my neighborhood, while not in Minneapolis, was impacted by loud, noisy, and sometimes intimidating demonstrations as they tried to move some court decisions out of the twin cities. We have not escaped the pain of this incident, and it seems the current state of our society is loveless, polarizing, and scary. So, when I purchase an audible book I am hoping for entertainment not subtle preaching. Having said that, it could have been a decent book, but too painful for me. There was also constant swearing by daughter and dad. Normally, I can deal with swearing, but this was another straw that broke the camels back.
