About this listen

In this haunting tale from the bestselling author of The Storyteller of Casablanca, Beatrice kept a wartime secret to protect the innocent. Now, could telling it set her free?

Tuscany, 1943. Stranded in war-ravaged Italy, Beatrice’s dream of an escapist year teaching English is shattered. Granted shelter at the Villa delle Colombe, she seeks refuge in Francesca and Edoardo’s beautiful walled garden, hidden from the outside world, with an elaborate cypress maze at its heart.

But Beatrice is not the only one seeking an escape here. Francesca has brought children to the safety of the house, as well as other adults, all of them seeking sanctuary on the estate with its mysterious maze. As the war closes in, the residents are forced to witness—and do—unthinkable things…

2015. Tess arrives at the villa raw from the agonising loss of her husband. Beatrice, now custodian, guides her to the solace of its gardens, where Tess begins to heal. But all hope of peace is shattered by the arrival of Marco, the estate’s absent owner, who wants nothing more than to hand it over to developers.

Distraught, Beatrice realises she must finally reveal the villa’s painful past if she wants to save it. As the extraordinary story unfolds, Tess realises that Villa delle Colombe is not just a refuge, but a beacon of hope in the darkest of times. Can she convince Marco to give it a new lease of life—and find a way back to happiness herself?

Totally enthralled by the the two intertwining stories. I only wish there would’ve been better closure to Alberto’s fate.

What a beautiful story!

I enjoyed the story, I just found Tess's character a bit 'winey' and the narrators voice a bit irritating at times.

Beautiful story

Nice story about healing from the realities of death and war. What we are capable of doing to survive is commendable to the characters in this book. I really enjoyed the story and all the twists and turns the maze took me through. Nice narration.

My only regret is that I passed over this audible for many weeks not really liking two generation stories. But I must say I really enjoyed both time frames. This can be a story for anyone who has lost a loved one and is stuck in hurt and grief and unable to get past it.. I highly recommend this audible

One of best stories I’ve ever listened too

I really enjoyed this book. I definitely enjoyed the World War II Era story more than the modern day one, but there was a lot of emotion in the modern story that I could really relate to you. It was very well told and kept me interested the whole time

A touching story of survival in Italy during World War II

This book was so enjoyable. The character development was surprising and yet it was also very well done. I highly recommend reading this book

A Great Read

Loved this story. One of the few books I couldn’t put down, just a simple story without graphic sex, violence or bad words.

Wonderful!

The Villa sound beautiful and makes you want to be there... except there is the war. I’ve read many books about World 11 but never in Italy.
Their predicament was different as they were occupied and many did support Hitler... neighbor against neighbor.
Beatrice from Scotland was escaping to Italy to teach English but got caught there unable to leave when Mussolini joined forces with Germany. She was able to take refuge at a villa in Tuscany if Francesca and Edwardo.
There is also another current time period with Tess escaping the heartbreak of losing her husband from a devastating illness. Marco enters the picture as he inherits the villa wanting to reduce the beautiful place to a golf course. Both time periods have its story with an interesting story line.

The writing is very good and becomes a can’t put down book.
