Acerca de esta escucha

Confessions abound - some of them quite unexpected - in Sheldon Siegel's legal thriller, the fifth in the outstanding Mike Daley/Rosie Fernandez series set in San Francisco.

Mike Daley doesn't go to confession much since he left the priesthood twenty years ago and became a lawyer, but that doesn't stop his old friend, Father Ramon Aguirre, from trying to get him there. "It wouldn't kill you to go to church once in a while," he tells Mike. But it does kill someone.

For several months, a ruinous sexual harassment suit has been building against the San Francisco Catholic Archdiocese, and when the plaintiff's lawyer is found dead, an apparent suicide, an almost audible sigh of relief is heard in certain quarters. But that is before the police find evidence of murder. Even worse - the evidence points to Father Aguirre.

Mike and his ex-wife law partner, Rosie, jump in to take the priest's case, but what started out as difficult soon appears impossible as forensics, witnesses, and secrets from Father Aguirre's past all incriminate their client. Soon, their wits are the only things keeping the priest from a life sentence or worse, and wits simply may not be enough-unless they can conjure up a miracle of their own.

Of Siegel's most recent book, Publishers Weekly said, "The verdict is clear; another win for Siegel." And so it is again with The Confession.

I really enjoyed the main character. He was really chill and laid back. The narration style was kinda hard to follow at first. It's written in 1st person but there isn't anything separating his internal thoughts to his next comment except for a slight pitch change. It makes you really have to pay close attention until you get used to it. Well, at least for me anyways. The amount of details and information was both interesting and entertaining. All in all, I liked it.

I saw it coming however still worth the listen

It’s the details of the story, it’s the story itself. No matter what the story kept me interested in wanting to go on. I’m also amazed at the number of voices and the effort to make them sound different. Indeed, it’s the story.

It’s the story

Sheldon Siegal has written a really awesome story, using a background monologue (the unspoken thoughts of the narrator) that is totally engaging. As a person who has lots of unspoken thoughts in order to remain politically correct and above the fray in lots of conversations, I loved this means of adding to the story.

The central character, a lawyer beset with a plethora of personal and professional problems, not to mention the sudden job of representing a priest accused of murder, remains polite and professional in the dialogue, but tells it like it is as he shares his thoughts. So effective!

Remember Dragnet, when the cop would offer background as the scene shifted, never sharing his thoughts that were shared with viewers with the suspects or other cops? This is Siegal's MO in the book and it works beautifully.

Thoroughly engaging crime drama from cover to cover. Loved it!

This is Great Drama (and Lawyering!)

Another wonderful listen by a master story teller. An excellent narration and a great array of memorable characters makes this book move well and be fun and engaging. Love the principle characters. There is enough injection of humor and sarcasm to keep a smile on my face while at the time trying I’m trying to unravel the case along with Mike and Rosy. The author’s knowledge of the courtroom and the maneuvering behind the scenes makes for very interesting material. I will download another in this series soon.

I liked that Ramon was truly a worker of Christ, I liked the voice of Mike Daley & his quest for the truth in all his cases. Both men disagreed on many things, yet the both were loyal, good men. Never was surprised about all the deceit leading up to the Acquittal. Evils face came in many forms, and it left you wondering who was guilty.

The truth about Evil.
