About this listen

This is one of Lovecraft's most beautifully written and frightening stories. It is written from the perspective of a surveyor, who, while surveying a rural area that is to be flooded near the town of Arkham, comes across a mysterious, abandoned farmstead, which is completely devoid of all life. At the center of the farmstead is an old well. The site fills him with an unnatural sense of dread, and, as it turns out, there is good reason for that feeling.

Wild

4 and a half out of 5 to 5. Beautiful, foreboding, and a great short story for my first Lovecraft story. I just don't remember if the story talks enough of the horror that happens and maybe more of the aftermath, I don't remember. Unsettling though. The narration is perfect for this story with it's low tone.

Great story and performance

Another underestimated great by Lovecraft. Also that narrator is top tier. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a spooky tale.

Great story and very good reader

What did you love best about The Color Out of Space?

Very dark and spooky.

What other book might you compare The Color Out of Space to and why?

Anything by Poe

What about Christopher Strong’s performance did you like?

Deep voice - perfect for this story of thing. Didn't notice any kind of "breath" thing like another reviewer did. To each his own, I guess.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Horror from Space

Any additional comments?

Looking for more from this reader but haven't seen much of my type of books. Hope he does more Lovecraft soon.

interesting enough but not great

was average. perhaps my expectations were too high & was mildly disappointed when the story didn't deliver as much "thriller/suspense" as I had, for some reason, anticipated.

Breathy narration may have ruin the story.

In my opinion the story would be more scary in a collection of Lovecraft's other books.

Without a doubt the inhales of the narrator made me angry instead of afraid which also prevented me for really getting into the mindset that would allow me to be scared.

Suffocating

The story is a classic amazing tale! The sound recording is terrible. I don’t actually blame the narrator for the sound. He delivers a monotone unfeeling reading which you could honestly get by. But the sound crew picked up every gasp, inhale/exhale that was made and totally takes you out of the story. Terrible!!! If this was a story about being trapped in a cave or underwater it would have been “intentionally” effective. Hard nope.

WARNING! Bad narrator.....

I couldn't get through ten minutes of what is probably a great book. The narrator takes loud, almost wheezing deep breaths every couple of sentences. It made ME feel suffocated. Click the 'Sample' button before you buy just to make sure you can handle the narrator....

Garbage. The narrator gasps like a fish out of water, and It's cut off at beginning.
