About this listen
A brand-new training regimen-off-leash in 30 days! - from the pack who brought you The Art of Raising a Puppy.
The Monks of New Skete, longtime breeders of German shepherds and established dog trainers of all breeds, have developed a new training technique. A decade in the making, this program represents a leap into the future, using cutting-edge technology and a game-changing tool: the remote electronic collar.
The Art of Training Your Dog presents their compassionate and efficient system for the first time, with background and advice on choosing the right collar. Employing a method designed by trainer Marc Goldberg, listeners integrate the e-collar gradually, laying the foundation for good behavior with intentional and purposeful walks.
Using very low stimulation at just the right time focuses a dog's attention for effortless learning moments that tie into a dog's natural pack instincts and help strengthen the bond between dog and human. In no time, listeners will see their pups master commands like "sit", "stay", and "place"; stop troublesome behaviors; and run safely off-leash with consistent recall.

Story
World-renowned trainer Sean O’Shea, owner and founder of The Good Dog Training and Rehabilitation, saw some recurring themes consistently derailing the human/dog relationship. Sean discovered that countless trainers and owners were struggling to not only understand these issues but to put clear, concise, easy-to-understand words to them. The Good Dog Way: Love Them by Leading Them, fills that incredibly important gap. Until its release, dog training books almost exclusively focused on training mechanics, commands, and rules, but had missed the all-important "why".

Story
As a SEAL on combat deployment in Iraq, Mike Ritland saw a military working dog in action and instantly knew he found his true calling. While the SEAL teams had used dogs in the past, they never had dogs trained specifically by SEALs, for SEALs. To fill this void, Ritland started his own company after he retired, training and supplying dogs for the West Coast SEAL teams. He knew that less than 1% of all working dogs had what it takes to contribute to the success of our nation’s elite combat units. He searched the globe for animals who fit this specific profile.

Dogs are one of the most popular companion animals, and many of them go through life confident and happy with the world around them. A significant number do not - the scared dogs, the anxious dogs, the ones that are terrified when approached by another dog, person, or a whole range of possible things. These dogs react to the causes of their fear in a range of ways, all of which combine to make what are called "reactive dogs", the ones that cannot cope and have to find a way to tell us.

This seemed like a fine book but I didn’t realize it was focused on ecollars. Since I’m not using one on my dog it just wasn’t that helpful. FYI in case you like me don’t pick up on that!

Useful and well organized book
I gave it a listen all the way through today and now I am ready to buy an e collar for my " new" 3 yo rescue pup.
You can't lose with Brother Christopher. This book is so well organized, I feel less overwhelmed as a beginner. I haven't done the lessons with my dog yet, but soon!
I'm new to dog training and Sirius, my rescue dog, though friendly, stalwart and cute, is very bad-mannered. (He's part bull terrier, so I got all the attitude, but no egg head. Not fair, but still, I chose him.) He jumps and then bites when he's happy. He's pushy, obnoxious, pulls non-stop on leas and is a food snatcher. He bites then too, not out of aggression; it just seems like no one ever worked with him on anything.
We've been doing the "Sexier Than a Squirrel" game challenge with Absolute Dogs for the past 5 weeks, and my dog and I are enjoying it. He's picked the games up quickly and his cretinism is somewhat lessened. But it's just not moving in along efficiently.
Although he's very good in his crate, I really want to give him more freedom in the house. I need to be able to trust him with my cat and I'd like to be able to take him on walks. So: e collar training with the kindly and skilled New Skete monks! This book makes it sound wonderful and doable.
I'm glad we started with the Absolute Dogs training. They provide a real sense of fun in dog training which this book doesn't really put forward. I can bring that bouyancey with me into this.
I don't however, understand why the "all positive" dog training schools are so anti-e collar. As a massage therapist, who's worked on animals as well as humans, I know animal athletes and pets are up for many types of therapeutic pressure and sensation including e-stim and tens unit therapy.
The way the Monks of Skete teach it, the e collar is generally set at a level less intense than either of those therapies. It's not a "shock collar" in the right hands, and the way Brother Christopher teaches it, it's an extremely precise, effective and kind way to train your best friend.
I feel confident about starting this well regimented 6 week program.

A lot of backstory, but still good info
I am a fan of the Monks of New Skete and liked there books 'The Art of Raising a Puppy' and 'Let Dogs be Dogs'. This book covered a lot of the same ground, and spent a lot of time on backstory, but I learned a lot about e-collars and appreciated the teaching descriptions for how to use an e-collar as an aid (it is one component of an overall process) to dog training.

Training planner not included!
The author of the book.
Describes describes a 6 week training plan chart that should have been included with this book but is not available with the audible version period
Normally, when there are maps for other important attachments to a hard copy book. They are included as downloadables with audible titles. But that has not been done. The training plan is described verbally and one of the chapters which is somewhat helpful, but it would have been a tremendous resource to Be able to download the training plan and print it.

This is the 2nd audiobook from the Monks of Mew Skete that I've listened to. Perhaps my own fault, but I would much prefer a physical form as the explanations would be easier to understand.

Common speaking errors
The book is fantastic, there’s no question about it. But the narrator often misspeaks. For example, “optimal” rather than “optional.” It can (and often does) change the meaning of a sentence.
This happens nearly every page. I am reading the book alongside the audio so it is impossible not to notice. In a nonfiction it doesn’t make much difference, I’m not going to train my dog any differently as a result of these misspeaks, but these errors simply shouldn’t happen in a paid product.
