Vor Daj is a member of John Carters personal guard, and is one of the fiercest warriors on Barsoom. As the two fighting men search for Ras Thavas, the brilliant mad scientist, in order to save the life of Dejah Thoris, Princess of Mars, they find themselves captured in a city of grotesque, seemingly unkillable monsters. These abominations have human body parts, but in all the wrong places and the wrong sizes.
This unique story in the John Carter of Mars series is the only one that is told from the point of view of Vor Daj, as he sees his adventure with the Warlord of Mars, John Carter.

Llana of Gathol is a unique volume in John Carter’s Barsoom series. While the previous books featured a single story throughout, Llana of Gathol is an anthology of four shorter tales written later in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ life. These stories are, The Ancient Dead, The Black Pirates of Barsoom, Yellow Men on Mars and Invisible Men of Mars. These are also considered to be the John Carter stories with the most humor, and explore the life of an older John Carter, Llana of Gathol being his granddaughter.

Its early chapters also contain elements of the Western. The story is set on Mars, imagined as a dying planet with a harsh desert environment.
