About this listen

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner.

Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s.

They are each other’s last chance. He was a young cop on the rise, she was bred to guard and protect. Now they are shunned and shunted to the side. They are suspect. And together they will set out to investigate the one case that no one wants them to touch: the identity of the men who murdered Stephanie.

Nine months and sixteen days later, they remained free. They were still out there.

What they begin to find is nothing like what Scott has been told, and where it will lead them will take them both through the darkest moments of their own personal hells. Whether they will make it out again, no one can say.

This is one of the best books I ever read.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Halfway through the book I was totally in love with Maggie Marine. Robert Crais understands dogs like nobody I've ever read. It's a great story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Maggie Marine. Who couldn't love this wonderful dog.

What about MacLeod Andrews’s performance did you like?

McLeod Andrews was perfect. He read this book with a thorough understanding of what the story was about.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely

Any additional comments?

I hope and pray that Maggie gets another book. She's as loveable as Elvis Cole and as tough as Pike.

Too Bad It's Abridged

There I was, gettin' my much-needed Robert Crais fix, and suddenly by hour three, names of characters, actions, scenes and relationships just didn't make much sense. Loved the K-9 element and the theme of struggling back to greatness after debilitating set-backs. It was like having a slice of my favorite pizza with some of the key ingredients missing. Good, I finished it, but it woulda been way better with pineapple and jalapeños.

This is surely a nonstop read.

Who is the hero? The Marine, the cop, or the dog? This a warmly written story that is timely in the fact that dogs are playing more of a role in war and police work. All three are heroes. Beautifully written and well delivered.

Not my normal

I like Crais but this was not my "normal" kind of book. I really really enjoyed it though! The only reason not 5 stars was because I wish it had been longer and more story there. Loved the bonds with Maggie!

Marine with a dog

Love Robert Crais. Heart warming. Dogs are amazing and the facts shared in this story and the reminder of what dogs will do for us humans is wonderful.

love him and his stories, but not abridged.

good mystery but not as well developed as usual but probably cuz it was abridged. way too "simplistic ", with no character development. but better than nothing on a Tuesday night!

Dogs rule

I was so happy when I heard Robert Crais had introduced two new characters, LAPD officer Scott James and Maggie, the ex marine patrol dog now given over to his care. Both have wounds and they help each other heal as the story progresses with Crais’ signature tight pacing and twists. I read this before listening to it and the narration was perfect. Five stars all around and I’m looking forward to more of Scott and Maggie when I listen to The Sentry.
