Publisher's summary

An Amazon Charts bestseller.

For a Florida police diver, danger rises to the surface in an adventurous thriller by the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Naturalist.

Coming from scandalous Florida treasure hunters and drug smugglers, Sloan McPherson is forging her own path, for herself and for her daughter, out from under her family’s shadow. An auxiliary officer for Lauderdale Shores PD, she’s the go-to diver for evidence recovery. Then Sloan finds a fresh kill floating in a canal - a woman whose murky history collides with Sloan’s. Their troubling ties are making Sloan less a potential witness than a suspect. And her colleagues aren’t the only ones following every move she makes. So is the killer.

Stalked by an assassin, pitted against a ruthless cartel searching for a lost fortune, and under watch within her ranks, Sloan has only one ally: the legendary DEA agent who put Sloan’s uncle behind bars. He knows just how deep corruption runs - and the kind of danger Sloan is in. To stay alive, Sloan must stay one step ahead of her enemies - both known and unknown - and a growing conspiracy designed to pull her under.

grap another one of his titles

I struggled to finish this one, I typically love Mayne's writing but this one just never brought the level of connection or enthusiasm that I normally feel. the three star might be harsher than what is merited but is more a result of my overall disappointment. go with any of his other books and you'll see what I mean it just doesn't measure up

Enjoyed Book, Lots of Details

I enjoyed this story as an avid suspense novel listener. Fair warning, there are a lot of names and details being thrown out there so you have to listen carefully.

The narrator was fine. I was a little annoyed with the tone she used throughout, almost sounded ditzy despite the fact that the main character was supposed to be a strong, confident woman. I also did not like how the narrator pronounced “Ugh” as Ug and I think there were a couple others where it should have been a sound or emotional word.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good suspense / action novel.

Not terrible.

Just an okay book overall. Not bad at all, but definitely not incredibly memorable or life changing either.

The Girl Beneath the Sea Review

I like the explanations for why things are done in investigations. I liked the growing trust between the main characters.

Ordinary police procedural

I started this because I was interested in a mystery that involves scuba diving, but it's just an ordinary police procedural. I made it about a third of the way through before I lost interest and returned it. It's not terrible, just very average. The author makes a few obnoxious statements, including describing prisons as public schools with cots, which might seem clever but is such a deeply ignorant statement that I wonder exactly what kind of research went into his work!

Fun listen and good narration!

Living in FL it was fun to hear a mystery set in a familiar locale. Liked the characters and it was a good mystery without being too dark/gruesome.

Enjoyable but not Fantastic

I definitely enjoyed this book. I liked the underwater aspects to the story. I smiled several times while listening and enjoyed the main character -- mostly. Sometimes the ways in which the main character got out of jams or evades pursuers or gets released from being held against her will...seemed a bit too easy and a bit random. A few aspects of her partner relationship with her co-investigator also just don't quite feel right. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable listen.
